MADELAINE BERKOWITSCH Obituary

(nee Michalec), 73, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2024, after a brief illness. Beloved sister of Brian Michalec of Albuquerque, N.M. Loving mother of Catherine (Kevin) Butler (nee Knop) and grandmother of Agnes. Devoted to her many cherished cousins and friends. Born to Charles and Elaine (Sparr) Michalec in Lorain, Ohio, she moved to Vermilion in high school and became a nurse shortly after graduation. Serving St. Joseph and Mercy Hospitals in Lorain, she was a nurse for more than 30 years. She worked for the Red Cross in Germany for five years and was fluent in German all her life. She loved caring for all her patients, especially in her Snoopy scrubs. She took special interest in rescuing animals, traveling, reading, watching old movies and singing along to musicals. She will be remembered for her kindness and easy ability to chat with confidants and strangers alike. Visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, at the McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Lakewood, 14133 Detroit Avenue. Private interment at Lakewood Park Cemetery. If you are inclined to donate to charity in her memory, please consider your local animal shelter.

I will always remember the story about how my Mom , Kathy, and your Mom Madeleine working at St Joes hospital together. A gentleman passed away and they were trying to find his teeth. They found a set in the medicine cabinet and tried to put them in but kept falling out. Turns out they were his roommates! They would laugh so hard they would cry! Your mom and my mom were the best of friends, even if they didn´t talk all the time. I loved your Mom almost as much as mine. I´ll always remember the few times we went to brunch for Mother´s Day at Pier W or Sawmill Creek. My prayers are with you and your family. I love you all and you´re always in my thoughts and prayers.

I will always remember Madeline and father driving her little red convertible past our home in vermilion and honking her horn as a hello. She was wonderful person, an excellent nurse. Our heart and our prayers go out to her family.

Madelaine reported to me at Mercy Health within the Discharge Phone Calls department. Her and I have kept in touch as I sent her cards at every holiday so that she knew I remembered her. My heart aches for Catherine and her husband and her dear Agnes who was the apple of her eye. I will miss my dear friend. Catherine Woskobnick
