Mae Thompson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by King-Tears Mortuary, Inc. - Austin on Feb. 25, 2026.
In Loving Memory of Mae Thompson

August 10, 1951 - February 18, 2026

Mae Thompson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, surrounded by her cherished "three kings": her husband, Emmitt, and her sons, Reginald and Dana. While we mourn her loss, we also find comfort in

remembering the remarkable life she lived and the lasting legacy she leaves.

Mae was born on August 10, 1951, in Elgin, Texas, to Booker T. and Lucy Haywood. Even as a child, Mae showed a lively spirit and a loving heart, qualities she kept throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Arthur Dean and Donald Ray Haywood, whom she remembered fondly.

Mae shared a wonderful life with her loving husband, Emmitt Thompson. They met in Austin and, in 1971, began their lifelong partnership. Together, they created a warm and joyful home for their sons, Dana and Reginald.

Mae graduated from L.C. Anderson High School and went on to study Sociology at Huston-Tillotson University. In 1970, while a student attending Houston- Tillotson, Mae became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She later earned a Master's degree in education from Prairie View A&M University. Mae's passion for learning and helping others led her to a rewarding career as a counselor at Austin Community College. She supported many students and was active in several student clubs and organizations. Mae was one of the founding members of the Black Student Success Committee (BSSC) at ACC. The BSSC provided academic counseling, mentorships, and scholarship assistance to students in need. Mae's deep understanding of the community and students made her a valued member of the Committee and of the College.

Mae's commitment to community extended beyond her professional life. Growing up, Mae was a dedicated member of Blacks Memorial Baptist Church and later joined the St. James Missionary Baptist Church, where she worshiped and actively participated in Church organizations such as "A Morning of Praise" where she served on the board until she became too ill to serve.

Mae was very creative, she especially loved quilting, crocheting, and making beautiful jewelry. She was always working on something special for her loved ones. Mae's creativity was matched by her strong spirit. Those who knew her best called her a "fighter." She faced challenges bravely and stood up for her family, inspiring everyone around her.

Mae is survived by her devoted husband, Emmitt; her loving sons, Dana R. Thompson and Reginald Thompson; her granddaughter, Karter J. Thompson; her sister, Shirley Haywood; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends who loved her dearly.

Mae Thompson's legacy of love, resilience, and creativity will continue to inspire us all. As we bid farewell to a remarkable wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and family friend, we will hold her memory in our hearts, grateful for the gift of having known and loved her.
