Maggie Beattie Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 18 to Nov. 19, 2010.
BEATTIE, Maggie Grow, 90 years young, of Midlothian, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dabney Ellis Beattie. Maggie leaves behind three children, Dabney E. Beattie Jr., Kim Beattie Harris and her husband, Bo, and Robert A. Beattie and his wife, Stephanie; five grandchildren, Tania Etheridge and her husband, Mike, Casey Sanders, Callie Beattie, Glenn Harris and his wife, Rebecca, and Ellen Miller and her husband, Kevin; two great-grandchildren, Ava Brown and Meredith Etheridge; and many nieces and nephews. Maggie also leaves behind her loving companion, Dr. Charles L. Williams. Born on November 24, 1919, Maggie lived her life to the fullest each and every day. She was once known as "Maggie Lee, Sweet Mistress of Song" when she traveled with big bands up and down the East Coast and at the Tantilla Gardens Supper Club in Richmond. She sang on Radio Station WRNL during World War II and entertained the patients at McGuire Veterans Hospital. She retired from the Federal Government, Defense General Supply Center in 1979, after 31 years of distinguished service. After retirement, she served as a Call-12 Volunteer for WWBT-12, NBC. She was an active member of the Brandermill Woman's Club, Woodlake Seniors Club, The Thelma Lipscomb Lunch Bunch and the Forever Young Red Hatters Chapter 2598 of the Red Hat Society. She loved her family and her friends and never met a stranger. Maggie once said that she believes in counting dreams, not years, and that the presence of wrinkles indicates "where smiles have been." A celebration of Maggie's life will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the Chesterfield Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 14301 Ashbrook Parkway. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. The celebration will begin at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her memory to the American Cancer Society, the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation (Hospice), or the Grove Avenue Baptist Church Television Ministry.

Nannie, I miss you everyday all day. I know you know all of this already but I still have to say it. You will always be with me and never ever forgotten as I will continue to keep your memory living through my children. I will cherish all the time we spent together & the memories we've made..forever. We are so blessed to have the close relationship and bond that we had. You are the true definition of what a Nannie should be. After all, you raised me :) I wish everyone could have that special bond with their grandparent. Thank you for helping mold me into the woman and mother I am today. You were a role model for mom and I both and we could not have asked for anything more. I am so thankful and blessed to have you apart of my life & all these wonderful memories for the past 30 years. I sit here with a huge smile on my face thinking of just the little things that made me love you so darn much and always want to be with you :)...chicken and rice soup, vanilla icecream sundaes, always taking my side when mom and I argued ;) sunbathing together on the water when you couldn't even swim, hehe, sick days at your house watching Days of our Lives and Funny Girl...just sooo many I could go on and on. I now have a better understanding of Ava and mom's relationship and why mom always says what goes around comes around b/c I'm certain now we drove her just a tad bit crazy :) I love you dearly Nannie and there will NEVER be another like you. You hold a very special place in my heart. I miss you and will see you again one day.

All my love, xoxo
Your grandaughter,
Tania Ellis Etheridge

I am saddened by the passing of our dear friend Maggie, but am so enriched for having known her. She was truly a "Special" soul with a zest for life, and lived with a purpose. Every time I encountered her I was uplifted and it was always a memorable experience. Rest in peace and may God hold you safely and lovingly in his hands.

What a shame - I just met this lovely lady on the bus trip to Peaks of Otter last month. She & Dr. Williams sat behind me & we shared some great old memories of having worked at "Bellwood" but had never met. We parted with promise to see each other again at the Dec. 1st luncheon.

Dear Family,
We are saddened to hear about Maggie's death. She was a true joy and delight to all who knew her. Martha worked with her at the Country Workshop and their friendship blossomed. We hope knowing others care will bring comfort to each of you. We always enjoyed being in her company and seeing that sweet smile. We will keep each of you in our thoughts and prayers. We are out of town and will not be able to attend the service for her but will be there in thought.
