WINDSOR-Mamie Sue Ward (69)- It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
She was born in Laurinburg, North Carolina on February 18, 1956, a daughter to the late Lewis I. and Beulah M. (McKenzie) Coburn.
As the daughter of a Command Sergeant Major, Sue's family moved several times throughout her childhood. Sue was a graduate of Delta Junction High School, Delta Junction, Alaska class of 1973. Following graduation, she followed in her military family's footsteps and enlisted in the United States Army. Once completing her 2-year enlistment period she transferred service to the Maine Army National Guard where she went on to become one of the first group of women in the State of Maine to achieve the rank of Master Sergeant. In 2003, she retired after 28 years of devoted service.
While in the service, Sue met her husband, Jeffrey Ward, and the two were married in Georgia on January 10, 1975. After starting a family, they settled in Windsor, Maine where together they raised their children, Shae and Dustin until Jeffrey's passing in 2001.
Sue loved the outdoors, particularly gardening, fishing, and trips to the beach. She was an animal lover; German Shepherds were one of her favorites. Sue will be remembered as a loving mother, easy going, thoughtful and just a beautiful person inside and out.
Sue is lovingly survived by her two children; daughter Shae McKusick and her husband Lance of Darlington, MD and her son Dustin Ward and his wife Jessica of Whitefield; two brothers and one sister; Chris Coburn and his wife Glenda of Fresno, CA, Kelly Coburn and his wife Vickie of Monson, and Sharon Smith of NH; three grandchildren Lilly, Mathew and Shauna; her significant other of over 20 years Ray Fletcher of Windsor, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life and graveside service will be held at the Sherman Mills Cemetery II in Sherman Mills, Maine at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sue's name may be made to: Wreaths Across America
Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330.
