Manuel Machado was born June 9th, 1954, in Graciosa in the Azores of Portugal to Jose and Maria Availa Machado. In his early years, Manuel was a dairy farmer in the Azores Islands. At the age of 26 he relocated to the United States to Peabody, MA where he took a job in a leather factory for seven years. Shortly thereafter, Manuel relocated to Hanford, CA to pursue farming jobs where he worked at dairies until 2010.

In 2007, Manuel was united in marriage to beloved wife, Julie Machado, of Jefferson City who survives in the home. Julie and Manuel enjoyed living life to the fullest including fishing and many travels together.  In 2010 Manuel and Julie moved to Wisconsin to a 5-acre residence where he planted a large garden and raised goats and chickens.

In 2014, Julie and Manuel relocated to Jefferson City where Manuel started working at Schulte’s Fresh Foods in the produce department where he worked until his passing. Manuel loved his fellow Schulte’s co-workers, and they came to be family to him.

Manuel was an avid wine maker, gardener, and builder – even completing many woodworking projects for his family. He was an expert in the kitchen, sharing his Portuguese cooking skills and recipes with all he knew, including linguiça and the ever-beloved sweet rice.

After many years of living and working in the United States, Manuel became a naturalized citizen of the United States in February of 2016.

At the age of 68, Manuel passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Capitol Region Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Manuel is survived by his wife Julie Machado of Jefferson City, son Marco Machado of Blountsville, AL, daughter Andrea Rulison, Mother-in-Law Eunice Cox, Son-in-Law Eric Rulison of Jefferson City, Step-son Corey (Jessica) Braun of Jefferson City, Step-Son Mark (Andrea) Braun of Chilton, WI, Step-Daughter Andrea (Scott) Reed of Waco, TX, as well as 16 grandchildren Lilly Perez, Gwen Machado, Isaiah (special friend Madisen Williamson), Elia and Mea Hanna, Michael and Justin Rulison, Cheyenne, Cody (special friend Jana Crawford), Grace and Allee Braun, Ethan Large, Lilli and Megan Braun, Dakota and Paden Reed. Manuel is also survived by his sister Maria (Joe) Bettencourt, brother Joe (Fatima) Avila, sister Maria (Camilo) Silva and many loved nieces, nephews and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Maria Avila, Father-in-law Donald Cox and brother in law Donald Cox JR, and niece Jennifer Foytik.

Visitation will be held at Trimble Funeral Homes, 3210 N. Ten Mile Dr. Jefferson City on Thursday, March 2, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon.    A celebration of Manuel’s life will begin at Noon.  Services will be livestreamed for those not able to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.  A memorial gift will then be given to the Oncology Dept. at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis.
