Manuel Lorenzo "Lory" Nabong
Born July 06, 1946 in Borongan, Philippines.
Died Oct 01, 2024, Park Ridge, Illinois, USA.
Manuel "Lory" Nabong was born in the Philippines to 1st Lt. Estanislao and Nieves Nabong. Lory grew
up in Catbalogan, Samar in the eastern Visayas of the Philippines.
He earned his bachelor's degree from San Beda College in Manila, Philippines.
He and Violeta Castañeda wed in 1977 at Holy Family Parish in Quezon City, Philippines.
Soon after the birth of their son Mark in 1978, Lory and Violeta moved their young family to the United
States in 1980, specifically to the greater Chicagoland area. Their second son, Bryan, was born in 1981
and was a significant improvement over the previous model. It was in Chicagoland that Lory spent his
career in Finance and Banking, working as an auditor and, eventually, vice president. His employers
included Standard Chartered, LaSalle Bank, Bank of America, and ABN Amro. He retired in 2008.
Lory was a resident of Morton Grove, Illinois for 43 years, an active parishioner of St. Martha's / All Saints
Parish, and a member of the Catbaloganon Society of Chicago.
Lory was an avid reader, and his love of reading was imparted to at least one of his children. He enjoyed
listening to the music of crooners like Frank Sinatra and Paul Anka, to rock n' roll like Elvis and the
Beatles, and the folk sounds of Peter, Paul, & Mary. He also loved to learn about history, often found
reading books about history or having the history channel on background in the home.
Whether it was making breakfast with his grandkids (his special "Lolo eggs" and "Lolo pancakes"),
enjoying a potluck meal at parties, or feasting on all you can eat crab legs at local buffets, nothing made
Lory happier than sharing meals with those he loved. And he loved his four grandchildren with all his
heart.
After moving to Chicago, Lory became enamored with the Chicago sports teams and the ups and downs
(and downs and downs) that came with it. He enjoyed experiencing the 1985 Bears, the Jordan-Era
Bulls, and the 2016 Cubs. Chatting about Chicago sports with him will truly be missed by his sons, and
particularly their father's post-game report when the teams 'played lousy'.
Lory was infinitely kind; on a business trip to the Mexican border, he once met an older lady selling
blankets on the road side. Rather than let her sit out in the cold all day, he purchased every blanket and
took them home with him. As a tribute to his unselfishness and kindness, we ask you to donate to the
American Heart Association (https://ahatribute.funraise.org/fundraiser/mark-nabong) in his honor, in lieu
of flowers.
Lory and Violy were married 47 years and lived for 43 years in the same house in Morton Grove. They
weathered floods, fires, blizzards, and the occasional hailstorm together in that house. Every tree on their
property was planted by them. Together, they saw the Great Wall of China, the glaciers in Alaska, the
Grand Canyon, Singapore, and Niagara Falls. Lory traveled all over the country and even to London as
part of his work responsibilities. Lory and Violeta renewed their wedding vows on their 47th anniversary
at the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.
Lory loved math as his favorite school subject and came from a family with a strong tradition in
engineering; he was incredibly proud when his son Bryan graduated with a degree in Computer
Engineering from the University of Illinois.
In the Philippines, Lory had received a scholarship to study law in either Geneva, Switzerland or
Chicago, USA, but all foreign scholarships were canceled by the Marcos regime in the 1970s. He was
very proud when his son Mark passed the Illinois bar exam to be an attorney in 2007. Lory spent 10 foundational years of his career in at Development Bank of the Philippines.
Lory passed into eternal life on October 01, 2024. He is no longer physically with us, but his spirit will
never leave our side for the rest of our lives. Seventy-eight years was too short a time to share with him
on earth, but we are the most blessed and fortunate family in the world to have had those seventy-eight
years.
Lory is survived by his wife of 47 years, Violeta, sons Mark (Kristianne), Bryan (Alice Jou), grandchildren
Aiden, Genevieve, Zoe, and Rosalind, and siblings Salvador, Fe, Richard, Maxim, and Guillermo. He is
predeceased by his beloved brothers, Herman and Ramon.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask you to donate to the American Heart Association in his honor
(https://ahatribute.funraise.org/fundraiser/mark-nabong). The family would like to show their gratitude to all
of their friends and family by inviting them to a luncheon celebrating Lory's wonderful life, which will be held at
Morettis,6727 N. Olmsted Avenue,
Chicago, IL.
