Obituary of Sister Marcella Nolan, SC
Sister Marcella Nolan, S.C., 88, formerly Sister Marcella Willliam, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died peacefully on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Complete Care at Saint Vincent's in Cedar Grove, New Jersey.
Sister Marcella was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of William and Bridget (Doyle) Nolan. She entered the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth on September 6, 1964, and was a member for 60 years.
Sister Marcella graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and from Long Island University, Long Island, NY with a MSP degree in Health Care Administration. Sister Marcella served in the health care ministry in the States of Connecticut and New Jersey. She served as an assistant to Director of Personnel, and as an Administrative Assistant at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, New Haven, CT, and as an Assistant Administrator and Vice President of General Services at Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Elizabeth, NJ. When St. Elizabeth merged with Elizabeth General Hospital in 2000, she served as the Executive Director of Marillac Corporation and in later years as a Patient Advocate at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth, N.J. Sher retired to the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity in January 2014.
Sister Marcella touched many lives through her ministry with her compassionate care for each person she encountered. She had a great love for her family and her Congregation and cherished the many friendships she had throughout her lifetime. In reflecting on her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Marcella said: "Devoting myself to God and His people has given me personal satisfaction in a way I had not experienced before."
Sister Marcella was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Teresa Boyer and Elizabeth Vibbard and her brother John Nolan. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity, her sister, Anna May Edmundson and her brothers, Martin and James Nolan and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
The wake for Sister Marcella will be held in Holy Family Chapel, Convent Station, NJ from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3rd followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station, N.J.
