Marcus Erwin

Marcus Daniel Erwin, age 51, passed away on November 10 at the Poppen House of Harbor Hospice after living with cancer for over 2 years.
Marcus was born in Muskegon on February 24, 1974 to Daniel Erwin and Marcia (Watson) Erwin. After graduating from Mona Shores High School, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Sociology with a minor in African American Studies from Grand Valley State University. In December of 1998, he met the love of his life, Shanna Mowen, with whom he enjoyed 23 years of marriage. After living in Chicago, San Diego, and Colorado, they returned to west Michigan and bought a home in Fruitport where they raised their daughter Evey, now 14. Marc spent his career as a social worker serving senior citizens, adults with mental illness, and adults with developmental disabilities, but the most important mission to him and his favorite title was "Dad".
He loved growing plants, especially cacti and succulents; his dog Roscoe; juggling; long walks in the woods; and Detroit Pistons basketball. During covid, he pursued his interest in the Pistons by forming an online chat group that holds weekly Zoom meetings. This group morphed into a tightly knit circle of friends very dear to Marcus.
Besides his tremendous courage while living with cancer, Marcus will be remembered for his great smile and his compassion. He spent his life serving others in both his occupation and his private life, using this Mahatma Gandhi quote to guide his actions: "Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Marcus is survived by his wife, Shanna; daughter, Evey; father, Daniel (Joan) Erwin of Muskegon; mother, Marcia Watson; sister, Andrea (Steve) Lewis; mother-in-law, Laurie Parker; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
He will be deeply missed and his light will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the family or to Harbor Hospice.
