Marcus "Hands" Hunter passed away at 64 years of age unexpectedly Monday, August 29, 2022 while recovering from colon cancer surgery. His final moments were filled with love as they were accompanied by the love of his life, his beautiful wife Denise.
Marcus was born April 22, 1958 to Margaret Ree Tinsley. Though his mother passed many years ago, his deep love for her was everlasting. He was raised in the "Village" located on the West side of Chicago and moved to the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the Southside of Chicago, in the family's cornerstone "7816" where he cherished the extremely close bond and lifelong memories he shared with his siblings and many cousins. He was known as one to always keep things real, very hardworking, passionate, loving, kind, musically talented and persistent.
Marcus, Mark, Hunter, Dad, GDaddy, Pops, Bruh-Bruh, Unk and sometimes affectionately called Baby would say his biggest accomplishment was being a loving husband of 43 years to his wife, Denise as well as an amazing father to their twin daughters Shannan and Shauna, a supportive father-in-law to Troy Hunter and Paris McKelvin and an attentive grandfather to his grandson, Jahmari.
Marcus possessed an early a passion for music and taught himself to play the drums. He played with a few different bands, gave drum lessons and was asked to play in a band aboard a cruise ship. He spent many years Dj'ing with favorite uncle Jimmy and had such a charismatic personality, he would bring laugher to any room. He was a member of the M.W. St. John Grand Lodge A.F & A.M where he invested time volunteering in various community outreach projects and built friendships and a brotherhood of a lifetime.
Marcus was undeniably thee best at "the fastest comebacks". His quick wit and ability to spontaneously give out nicknames to his loved ones, made him loveable and hilarious. Whether it was calling his daughters Mousalini and Snoop or beloved family members, Squirrel, Lemonhead, Hotrod, The Cats, Greasy Greasy, Gummy Bear, Secret Squirrel or Bumblebee; everyone knew those names came from a place of love.
Love also motivated Marcus to make himself readily available to listen to those in need and share gems of wisdom he gained throughout his life. Some of Marcus' favorite saying were, "Stay alert, Stay alive', and "All tubs have to float on their own bottoms", self awareness and independence are many lessons he instilled in his daughters, grandson, nieces and nephews and how he choose to live his life combined with Persistence and hardwork.
His persistence paid off at a bus stop in 1977, where he met his wife Denise. Engulfed by her beautiful smile, ruffle socks and high heels, he offered her a ride but she declined; so he decided to follow her home. His magnetic personality moved them to exchange numbers and they were married, December 17, 1978. They had two daughters Shannan & Shauna and Marcus vowed to support and sacrifice for his family. He worked over 15 at Brach's Candy Co., spent many years as a professional musician and within the last 7 years with UIC hospital, 3 years shy of retirement. Marcus loved a clean Cadillac, the Chicago Bears, First 48, Sci Fi Films and documentaries, but most importantly spending time with his family, playing chess with his grandson and he especially looked forward to retiring and traveling with his best friend and wife, who he would affectionately call Niecy.
Aside from being survived by his wife Denise, daughters Shannan McKelvin (Paris) and Shauna Hunter (Troy), cherished grandson Jahmari Coleman as well as his beloved dog Coko aka Bad Butt, he also leaves behind his Sisters Delores Hunter, who proceeded him in death (Mytoya & DeMarcus Hunter), Judith Hunter, Lisa Hunter (Jeremy & Jerrett Crawford, Jerlisa & Christopher) Coleman), his adored Aunt, Anne Brooks and Mother in Law Estelle Jones, a host of brother & sister inlaws, nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, cousins, lodge brothers, friends, extended daughters & sons and a special cousin Pamela Summerall.
