Marcus Aaron “Shine” Shines, 42, passed away on March 2, 2025, in Winona, Minnesota. Born on April 9, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, Marcus brought warmth and energy to those around him throughout his life.

Marcus attended Peter Van Vlissingen Grammar School and later graduated from Corliss High School in Chicago. He possessed a variety of trade skills that reflected his hardworking nature and adaptability. Beyond his professional abilities, Marcus was known for his love of cooking- especially barbecuing during the summer months. He found joy in bringing people together over good food and laughter.

Marcus held a special place within the Shines family as the oldest grandson, nephew, brother, and cousin of his generation. Affectionally known as “SHINE,” he carried deep love for his family and took pride in keeping their bonds strong. His presence will be profoundly missed.

Though taken too soon, Marcus’ memory will live on through the love he shared and the joy he brought into the lives of others.

Marcus is survived by his loving fiancé, Olivia Effelson; mother, Wilma (Slyvester Chapman) Shines; four younger brothers: Marvin Shines, Gregory Shines, Marsean Shines, and Steven Shines; nine beautiful children: Marshe Shines, Myah Shines, Jashawn Spencer, Alisha Shines, Mia Shines, Maximus Shines, Madison Shines, Evah Shines, and Marcus Shines Jr.; cousins that he loved like his siblings: Bryant Shines, Philip Chambers, Willie Chambers, Keith Chambers, his favorite twins: Crystal Shines and Sparkle Shines, Roscoe Bracy and Kiaela Bracy; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins that he adored deeply.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rachel Shines; aunts, Winifred Shines and Zerline Shines; uncles, L.C. Shines and Roscoe Watson; and cousins, Benjamin Shines and Jonta Shines.

May his spirit continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him.
