Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home - Miles City on Dec. 29, 2025.
Marcus 'Marc' Hall Stevens, rancher and resident of the Otter Creek community, passed away peacefully at the Powder River Manor on December 25, 2025. Marc, the youngest son of John and Dorothy (Howes) Stevens, was born on March 28, 1936, in
Sheridan, Wyoming.
Marc grew up in
Sheridan, WY though his home was on Otter Creek at the Circle Bar Ranch which his family homesteaded in 1883. Marc graduated from Sheridan High School in 1953. He received a ROTC scholarship to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder. However, he determined that he wanted to study agriculture, instead he attended and graduated from Colorado A&M in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1957. Marc was, in fact, the last student to receive a signed diploma from Colorado A&M, as the university changed its name to Colorado State University later that year. It was here that Marc met Nancy 'Nan' Price of Clarinda, Iowa. The two married on August 14th of that year.
After they married, Marc and Nan moved to the neighboring ET Ranch in Southeastern Montana. They welcomed their first child, William 'Bill', on June 12, 1960. Marc, Nan, and Bill moved to the main headquarters of the ranch on Otter Creek in 1961. Here, Marc would be mentored by his grandfather, Levi Howes. On December 27, 1962, Suzanne 'Suzie' joined the family on the Circle Bar. Rounding out the family, Cynthia 'Cindi' was born on May 16, 1967.
Marc was known as a cattleman. Spending time studying the family's cattle and working to improve herd health and longevity gave him great pleasure. Marc and Nan often traveled around the western regions of the US visiting family and friends while making sure to visit feedlots and breeders along the way to gain more insight into improving the herd back at home. Marc's love for the range and the cattle that grazed upon it greatly influenced his children and grandchildren. They all learned from him and continue his teachings in ranching today.
Marc served in the Air Police Division of the Wyoming Air National Guard from the late 1950's through the 1960's. Marc was also a lifetime member of the Powder River Masonic Lodge.
Fly fishing in the Big Horn Mountains was a favorite pastime of Marc's. He also enjoyed hunting and flying in his Cessna 180 airplane. Marc also had a passion for playing cards, specifically Bridge, with neighbors Frank Hagen, Ted Fletcher, and Dick Fletcher.
The family is deeply appreciative of the care Marc received from the staff at the Powder River Manor and of the many friends and relatives who visited Marc during his stay there.
Marc was preceded in death by his parents John and Dorothy Stevens, his son Bill Stevens, granddaughter Rebecca Notti, and grandson Nick Gratwohl.
He is survived by his wife Nan of Otter Creek, MT; brother Calvin (Frances) Stevens of San Jose, CA; daughters Suzie (Jae) Notti of Otter, MT; and Cindi (Hal) Gratwohl of Otter Creek, MT; daughter-in-law Jan (Bill) Stevens of Otter Creek, MT; grandchildren Heather (John) Herman of Sonnette, MT; Jennifer (Chet) Clairmont of New Bern, NC; Megan Stevens of
Sheridan, WY; Sarah (Anthony) Delaney of Otter, MT; Levi (Shelby) Bryan of Salmon, ID; and Hunter (Rebecca) Gratwohl of Otter Creek, MT; and numerous great grandchildren.
A family service was held on December 29, 2025, in Marc's honor.
