Margaret Bates , 86, of Fremont, OH passed away on January 3, 2025 at her home in Fremont. Margaret was born on February 26, 1938 to Marcellus and Margaret (Brown) Lewis in Cumberland, MD. She attended Carver High School. She was a 1954 graduate of Allegheny High School.
Margaret moved to Cleveland and worked at Fred Harvey’s in the Terminal Tower in Cleveland, OH where she met her love Herman Bates and they were married on February 9, 1957 in Cleveland, OH and he survives, to this union five children were born.
Margaret worked for Memorial Hospital, Countryside Nursing, Danish Pastry and Peter Eckrich where she retired after many years of service. Margaret enjoyed to play card games, cooking, baking, reading, traveling, drawing, latch hook and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Margaret is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Herman Bates; children Herman Bates, Jr., Fremont, OH, Terrence Bates, California, Sabrina Bates, Fremont, OH, Eric Bates, California, Tiffany Bates, Fremont, OH; thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; brother, Calvin (Evelyn) Lewis, Rochester, NY; and siblings-in-law, Barb Lewis, Joan Lewis, Sue Lewis, Bill Peck; Herman’s siblings, Alberta Harris, Cleo Bates, Leo Bates.
She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Tonda Page; siblings, Marcellus Lewis Jr., Marshall Lewis, Lawrence Lewis, Robert Lewis, Roxanne Peck, Herman’s siblings, Nathaniel Bates, Mary Golson, Calvin “Jack” Bates, Queen Esther Brooks, Rose Mae Ezell, Jesse Bates, Roberta Sanders
A Memorial Service will take place on January 25, 2025 from 2-4 p.m. at Greater St. James Church, 629 6th St., Fremont, OH 43420.
Memorials can be made in her honor to Donor’s Choice.
