Margaret Ann Birney, 98, of Williamsburg died November 20th, 2024, at the Williamsburg Landing.
Mrs. Birney was born in Grafton, ND, on Jan. 11, 1926. She was the only child of Annie Thompson and Carl Momerak. She graduated from Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She married Robert Birney in 1949. They resided in Amherst, Massachusetts before coming to Williamsburg in 1978.
Mrs. Birney was a member of Bruton Parish Church where she was a volunteer in the church gift shop and had been a volunteer for pastoral care. She was a member of the Williamsburg Music Club, Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered for Hospice when it was first organized. She served on the United Way board for six years.
She was a volunteer for the Colonial Williamsburg Research Library's rare book room for thirty years. While living in Amherst she was the volunteer curator of the Amherst Historical Society's Strong House. Here, she became interested in genealogy and started researching her family when she arrived in Williamsburg. She did a book on each family for her many cousins living in Norway, Minnesota and North Dakota.
Survivors include her husband Robert, two sons, Reed Charles Birney (Brenda), Robert Carl Birney (Sheila), daughters Barbara Ann Birney, Ruth Elizabeth Birney Plagenhoef (Garry), seven grandchildren, Julie Plagenhoef (Evan Seifert), Kelsey Plagenhoef Bowen (Nathan), Lauren Birney Gray (Taylor), Scott Birney, Sarah Birney Lade (Nicholas), Sam Birney, Caroline Birney, and six great-grandchildren, Clara and Alice Seifert, Rooney and Gellar Bowen, and Teddy and Miles Gray.
A memorial service will be held at Bruton Parish Church on January 18th, 2025 at noon.
Reception at the Bruton Parish House.
Bucktrout Funeral Home oversees arrangements.
