Margaret (Maggie) Fullick Devine, born November 20, 1942, passed away peacefully at home with family on December 27, 2025, in
New Orleans, Louisiana.
Born in London and adopted during World War II by Bertie and Jessie Fullick of Beckenham, Kent, Maggie graduated from Bromley Grammar School for Girls and promptly set about discovering the world and the arts. Her travels brought her to meet her first husband, Louisiana-born future professor William Odom, in El Campello, Spain, in the early sixties. They were married soon thereafter in New York, moved to New Orleans, and had their only child Stewart in 1969 while living in what is today the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum. Maggie helped launch the Maple Leaf Bar at its inception, and the family then moved to Hattiesburg, where she studied and performed Dance at the University of Southern Mississippi. She completed an MFA in 1979 at New York University, studying under a distinguished group including abstract pioneer Merce Cunningham.
Returning to Hattiesburg, Maggie began teaching gifted studies and dance in Mississippi public schools in the 1980's and eventually served as president of the Mississippi Dance Association. In 1987, she married her second husband Francis E. (Frank) Devine, a USM Criminal Justice professor. The two retired to New Orleans in 1998 and remained together until Frank's passing in 2011.
She will be remembered for her sharp wit, whimsical creativity, love for animals, and lovely soprano singing voice.
She is survived by her son Stewart Odom, stepdaughters Margaret Devine Crowe and Janet Devine Gillow, and step-grandchildren Alexander, Brendan, and Caroline.
There will be a private service for Ms. Devine on Saturday, January 17. Please contact her family for details.
