COLUMBIA - Margaret Johnson Grumbach, 82, passed away Monday, January 4, 2010. Born in Charleston on February 6, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Vandorn Carl and Bertha Henrics Johnson. Margaret attended Rivers High School in Charleston and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. After high school, she was employed at the American Tobacco Company in Charleston. She was the wife of Lt. Col. Delbert T. Grumbach, USAF (Ret.) and traveled with him to various assignments in the United States and Europe. She was a lifelong resident of South Carolina and settled in Summerville in 1976 after her husband’s retirement. She and Delbert moved to Columbia in 2005. Margaret enjoyed being with her family, cooking and shopping. She was an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Summerville until she moved to Columbia. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons, Dr. Stephen D. Grumbach, USAF (Ret.) and his wife, Sue of Stafford, Va, Dr. Robert Grumbach and his wife, Susan of Camden; five grandchildren, Jasmine, Laura, Meg, Will and Gray; great-grandchild, Cadence; brother, Kenneth B. Johnson of Columbia. She was predeceased by her brother, Vandorn Johnson, Jr and his wife, Patricia; sisters, Mildred Adele Barton and Bertha Joyce Johnson. Graveside service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, January 9, 2010, in Bethany Cemetery in Charleston. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2010, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, S.C. Chapter, 3223 Sunset Blvd, Suite 100, West Columbia, SC 29169.
