POLKTON – On Monday, July 3, 2023, Mrs. Margaret Ann Smith Henry, 93, passed away peacefully at Hospice Haven in Rockingham.

The family will have a private celebration of life service and burial in Griffin Cemetery in Polkton.

Margaret was born June 1, 1930, in Scotland County, NC and was the oldest daughter of the late Marshall Albert Smith and the late Ethel Blue Graham Smith. When Margaret was just a small child, her family built a home in Polkton and moved there where she lived all her life in the family homeplace.

She graduated from Polkton High School and worked for many years in Wadesboro at Woods Five and Dime Store. Following the store’s closing, she went to work at Anson Shirt Factory where she retired.

Margaret was a member of Polkton United Methodist Church since childhood, and she dearly loved her church and was active there until her health declined. She was also a member of the Polkton Women’s Service Club, where she was instrumental with the meals provided by the “depot ladies”.

She enjoyed the simple things in life. Blue Grass and Country music were her favorites and her daily walks in Polkton with her dear friend, Betty Lockhart. She was not afraid of hard work, as she mowed her acre of land at home with a push mower until she couldn’t mow it any longer and had to rely on her family. She loved clothes, jewelry and Avon.

Margaret was devoted to her family, having been the primary care giver for her parents. It was after their deaths that she married the love of her life of 40 years, Robert Clay “Buss” Henry. They shared a good marriage until his passing. Her family is comforted in knowing she has been reunited with her parents, Buss, and her sisters, Betty and Frances.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her nieces and nephews, Ann Hyatt Poplin and husband, David of Lilesville, Freddy Hyatt and wife, Joanne of Ansonville, Harriett Hyatt Leary and husband, Tank of Ansonville and Frank Hyatt and wife, Leslie of Polkton and their families and her extended family at Wadesboro Health and Rehab, where she has been a resident for the past 7 years.

Margaret’s family is most grateful to the Staff and Residents at Wadesboro Health and Rehab for all they have done for her over the past years and most recently to the staff of Hospice Haven in Rockingham for allowing her to have peace, comfort and dignity in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wadesboro Health and Rehab Family Council, 2051 Country Club Rd., Wadesboro, NC 28170 or to Hospice Haven, 1119 N US HWY 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
