Margaret Heyde Obituary
Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Apr. 9, 2014.
Margaret M. Heyde, (Peggy) of San Antonio, Texas passed away on April 9, 2014 just nine days short of her 80th birthday.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who enjoyed spending time with her family and many close friends.
Peggy graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University where she fostered many lifelong friendships. As well as being an excellent student, she was very active in extra-curricular activities; performing in several drama productions and serving as student body president. After graduation, she married the love of her life, Francis L. Heyde and began her career in education. She taught in the San Antonio and South San Antonio Independent School Districts as well as for the Defense Language Institute at Lackland AFB before becoming an author of the curriculum for the DLI. One particular highlight of her career with DLI was her extended stay in Indonesia. While on that side of the globe, she visited Egypt, Israel, and other Middle Eastern countries. Add this to her yearlong stay with her husband in Tehran, Iran and an extended European vacation and she was quite the world traveler. Frank insisted that Peggy retire from DLI in 1994 so they could spend more time together.
More important to her than her career as an educator was her life as a wife, mother and grandmother. Peggy was completely devoted to her husband and family. She was a true partner to her husband Frank. They did everything together from shopping and laundry to camping and extensive travel. She was a wonderful hostess at their many backyard parties for friends and family. She did not really need an occasion to have a party. She was also a "hands on" Mom who was very involved in her children's lives, both while they lived at home and after they were married and out of the house. She was oftentimes a Room Mother and was active in the PTA in her children's schools. She spent countless hours chauffeuring her children to and from dance classes, swimming lessons, football practice, and music lessons. She seldom missed a performance, game or meet. When she was blessed with grandchildren, she was a wonderful grandmother. She loved spending time alone with her grandchildren as well as attending their many activities. She did a lot of babysitting over the years and of course the grandchildren were always "perfect angels" while their parents were away.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Francis L. Heyde; her mother, Beatrice Slavin; her sister and brother-in-law, Dolores and Robert Graham.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Susan and Terry Powell, Douglas and Angela Heyde, and Frank and Cheryl Heyde; her precious grandchildren, Cory and Kevin Powell, Leann Heyde, Emily Payne and husband Gavin, Rachel and Grace Heyde. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Loretta Oriet-Kemp, and many beloved nieces and nephews in Texas, Arizona, Indiana and Massachusetts.
May Peggy's memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
