Margaret Mary Ebner Savage
LITCHFIELD – Margaret Mary (Ebner) Savage, 87, passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Michael H. Savage.
Margaret was born in Thomaston, on February 10, 1938, daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Danaher) Ebner. She graduated from Thomaston High School, with high honors, in 1956. She went on to get her Bachelor's degree from Boston College and became a Registered Nurse.
Margaret and Michael were married in 1961 and spent their first years in Thomaston before moving to Litchfield, where they raised their sons.
She began her career working at St Mary's Hospital until she assumed a position for Dr. Elliot Mayo's medical practice in Waterbury, CT, as his head nurse for 35 years. She was affectionately known as Nurse Marge. She finished her career working for Dr. Leonardi Koliani. Margaret would also visit the sick and elderly on a regular basis and did so with grace and compassion.
In 2005, Margaret was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which she courageously won her battle, becoming a 20-year survivor. Margaret had a love for life. She enjoyed reading books; sometimes 3 at a time, playing the piano and other musical instruments. She loved the sport of tennis with her tennis group and when she could no longer play tennis she began swimming every day.
She also met with her Boston College classmates several times a year.
Margaret enjoyed spending summers with her family on Hitchcock Lake in Wolcott, CT, where many celebrations and good times were had with family and friends; cooking out, swimming and waterskiing. She developed a love for fishing and went on great fishing adventures in Maine in the 1980s.
Margaret was a devout Catholic and had a very special relationship with her religion that reflected in how she lived her life and was known for attending Mass on a daily basis. She and her family were devout parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua Church, in Litchfield, CT, where she also donated her time, volunteering her services. She also volunteered at the Lourdes Shrine.
Margaret also happily volunteered her time to many organizations, including CJR, where she worked as a host at the Litchfield House Tour, Torrington's Annual Bike Race, Litchfield Community Center, where she served as a volunteer nurse, and Road to Recovery, an organization that provided transportation to patients for cancer treatments. In addition, she was a long-standing member of the Visiting Nurse Association of Litchfield.
Margaret was devoted to her family above all else. Her husband, sons, granddaughters, nieces, nephews, brother, cousins, in-laws and, last but not least, her cats, were always by her side when she needed them most.
In addition to her loving husband, Michael, she is survived by her two sons, Michael (Cindy), and Christopher (Tori); granddaughters, Tori, Keelyn, Heather and Avery; step-grandchildren, Cory and Kale; great-granddaughter, Aria; step-great-granddaughter Malia; and her brother, Benedict Ebner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, Litchfield. Burial will be private. There are no visiting hours.
