Margaret (Peggy) L. Smart

Age 99 of Haddon Twp., NJ

Margaret (Peggy) L. Smart died peacefully on December 5th at age 99 at her residence in Haddon Township, NJ.

Peggy grew up in Larchmont, NY and graduated from Mamaroneck High School (1944) and then Berkeley School (1945). She married her husband, William A. Smart, Jr. (Bill) in 1947.

The Smarts made South Jersey home, moving to Haddonfield in 1964 and Haddon Township in 2002. After staying home to raise six children, Peggy worked as an executive secretary, first at Atlantic Richfield and later with area attorneys. She enjoyed volunteering for many groups, including Virtua Hospital's Women's Auxiliary's B-Thrifty resale shop in Westmont where she worked for at least 15 years.

She is survived by her children Suzanne Smart, Santa Fe, NM; Carol Pietravalle, Nashua, NH; Mary Lou Smart (Tom Bernaciak), Winston-Salem, NC; Jim Smart, Carson City, NV; Kathy Smart, Haddon Township, NJ; daughter-in-law Melissa Smart, Hayward, CA; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her dear husband Bill (2/2025), son William A. Smart III and sons-in-law Richard Pietravalle and Don Smith.

She loved to travel, especially to Ireland, where her mother was born and many relatives still live. She was fond of dining out, sewing, swimming, gardening, reading, watching golf on TV and doing crossword puzzles. Cheerful up until the end, she is remembered for her wisdom, kindness and generosity, her sense of humor and devotion to family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
