vMargaret Smiley Strom Moody of Greenville, SC, died peacefully surrounded by her family on October 26, 2025, at the age of 91. Peggy, as she was known, was born in Greenville to Thomas Elmo Strom and Lula Ballentine Smiley Strom on January 2, 1934 (1/2/34).
Peggy was a beloved mother and grandmother who is survived by her two daughters, Maxine Moody Poston and husband Dr. Harold Chalmers Poston of Flat Rock, and Laura Jean Moody Reed of Greenville; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Jean Poston of Charlotte, Eric Chalmers Poston of Columbia, Lane Strom Poston (Erica) of West Columbia, Mitchell Alan Reed of Asheville, and Philip Ashley Reed (Shih-Wei “Annabelle”) of Greenville; as well as two great-grandchildren, Liam and Kobe. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Betty Jean “B.J.” Strom Melville and Maxine Strom Brice, and by her former husband, Col. John Fleetwood Moody, U.S. Army (Ret.).
Peggy’s family and friends remember her for her caring yet fiercely independent spirit. In addition to raising two children as a military spouse, she operated two successful businesses for a time. She was a skilled DIY’er who could build walls, lay tile, or tackle anything else she set her mind to. She was an exceptional gardener and avid reader, made exquisite quilts for her children and grandchildren, and painted beautiful landscapes, especially of her favorite seasons, fall and winter.
A funeral service will be held for Peggy at St. Michael Lutheran Church, Greenville, at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 7, with a reception to follow at the church. Memorials for Peggy may be made to Chicora Voices and Meals on Wheels.
