Margaret Zimmerer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of Kansas & Missouri - Prairie Village on Dec. 8, 2025.
Margaret J. Zimmerer, lovingly known as "Peggy" passed away in Kansas City, Missouri, on November 30, 2025, at the age of 89. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late John N. Burkel and Margaret M. (Shelke). Peggy was raised in St. Louis, Missouri, attending Our Lady of Sorrows Grade School, and graduating from Cleveland High School, class of 1954. She was an active Girl Scout, and enjoyed playing volleyball, basketball, and softball.

Peggy's adult life was filled with service and community involvement. She was a Cub Scout Leader, member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and a neighborhood spokesperson who advocated for protecting neighbor's rights. After retirement, she volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, and later at Saint Luke's Hospital North Gift Shop. She was honored for contributing over 2,500 volunteer hours in the Gift Shop.

Peggy went to work for the St. Louis Cardinal Organization after graduation. It was there that she developed her love of Cardinals and The Cardinals. A job transfer for her husband brought them to Kansas City, and in 1966, their son Bob, was born.

In 1977, Peggy accepted a bookkeeping position for Tower Property Company where she remained for 30 years, retiring at the age of 71. She left behind good friends, not just coworkers.
Peggy enjoyed movies, traveling, walking, gardening, and avidly cheering on the Kansas City Royals and Chief's, and secretly, the Cardinals, her first favorite sports team.

Peggy was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by her son, Robert (Bob) S. Zimmerer (Donna); granddaughter, Kersten V. Conner (Robert); grandsons, Rorey D. Zimmerer and Shane Uminn (Katie and Seth); siblings, George L. Burkel (Sandra) of St. Louis, Missouri, MO, John R. Burkel (Barbara) of Charleston, SC, and Katherine (Kathy) S. Orson (Eric) of Kansas City, MO; nieces, Elaine Walker, Phyllis Flowers (Jerry), Jill Sidoti, Lynn Dodson (Matt) and Jean Orson; nephew, Eric Burkel; great-nieces, Lauren, Hannah, and Madelyn; great-nephews, Orion, William, Nicholas, and Ryan.

Peggy will be remembered for her diligence, determination, loyalty, and her unwavering love for her family and community. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry at St. Therese Church, Parkville, MO or The Gift of Life [email protected] or (913) 851-1947
