Margarita Barradas Obituary

Houston - Margarita Barradas Margie (Cantu) 89, Margarita was born in Los Fresnos, Texas, to Rosa and Federico Cantu. She was the youngest of 11 children. She is predeceased by her parents, four sisters, six brothers, and her beloved daughter, Yvonne Barradas Akin.

On the outside, she was stylish, dignified, and assured. On the inside, she was motivated, resilient, and devoted. She cared deeply for her family, friends, and her faith.

Margarita graduated from Saint Mary's Nursing School in Galveston, Texas. A nurse for 39 years, she was the Director of the University of Texas at Brownsville nursing school. In 1991, she retired to care for her two granddaughters. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, fishing, and trips to the beach.

In her retirement, she was an active member of Saint Anne Church in Houston. She served as a member of the Women's Guild and the Alter Society. She helped their Hispanic community by teaching English as a second language.

She was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, nurse, and teacher. To know Margarita was to stand a little straighter, to try a little harder, and to never leave without a hug goodbye.

She is survived by her daughter Margaret Barradas O'Neal and her husband Timothy O'Neal, her granddaughter Meredith O'Neal Flatley and her husband Michael Flatley, and her granddaughter Stephanie Jean Akin.

Ms. Barradas taught me to be a confident nurse, be a strong person and made us (her students) a little tougher ! I graduated from nursing school in the late 80's but thought about her today and found this obit when I did a Google search. Fly high Ms. B.
