Margie McKinley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home - Independence on Mar. 26, 2026.
Margie J. McKinley (Overbay) passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026 at the age of 96.

This extraordinary woman's life was defined by love, creativity, and selflessness. Born in Laurel County, Kentucky, Margie spent her early years traveling with her family as her father worked on the railroad. Though they lived in Florence, Glencoe, and Verona along the way, she always considered Hazelpatch her true home.

Margie was a member of Florence Baptist Church, where her faith and gentle spirit were evident to all who knew her. She was, above all, a loving mother who truly cherished raising her children. She poured herself wholeheartedly into their lives, creating a home filled with warmth, care, and unwavering support.

As her children grew and began families of their own, Margie embraced a new chapter-one that allowed her to nurture her lifelong passion for art. Inspired by watching painting programs for years, she finally had the time to develop her skills. She attended art classes at local civic centers, where she flourished and found great joy in learning and creating.

Margie was gifted in many forms of art. She crafted beautiful crochet pieces, including outfits, purses, afghans, and pillows, each made with care and precision. Over time, she expanded her talents into oil painting, delighting in experimenting with different scenes and styles. Her creativity was a reflection of her vibrant and thoughtful spirit.

When she became "Mamaw Kinley," Margie once again poured herself into caring for others-this time, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She shared her love of art with them, introducing them to classes and creative projects. Some of their most cherished memories were the summer weeks spent with her-days lounging by the pool and evenings filled with crafting and painting rocks together.

In her final days, Margie was surrounded by the same love she had given so freely throughout her life. Her family cared for her with deep devotion. Even then, Margie's concern remained for others-she was mindful of her caregivers' well-being and always wanted to ensure they were appreciated and supported.

Margie J. McKinley will be remembered as a deeply loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; a talented artist; and a truly selfless soul. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the beauty she created with her hands and her heart.

Preceding Margie in death are her parents; Stanley and Pearl Overbay, sons; Donald Ray McKinley and Ernest Wilson McKinley, siblings; Lawrence Overbay, Christine Carter, Edward Overbay, Martha Bell Tomlin, Elesa Beach, and Lela Purnell, grandson; Stanley Parker, and great grandson; Hunter Derrick Barnett.

Margie is survived by her children; Linda Coomer, Pat McKinley, Rene (Nelson) Barnett, and Stephen McKinley, stepdaughter; Judith (Robert) Klette, brother; Buddy Overbay, eighteen grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren, sixteen great great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Please join her family for funeral services on Monday, March 30th at the Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home 11382 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051. Visitation from 11:30am to the start of the service at 1:30pm. Margie will be laid to rest with her family at the New Bethel Cemetery.
