Maria Baez Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Williams Funeral Home, Inc. - Bronx on Dec. 24, 2025.

Maria Guadalupe Baez, lovingly known as Digna, went to God on the eve of her 95th birthday. Born in La Romana, Dominican Republic, she was the youngest child of Jose and Maria Jacinta. She grew up not only in the bosom of her loving family but also among the lifelong friends she maintained as hermanos and hermanas until the end of her life.

She emigrated to the United States in the 1960s. She then eagerly and selflessly helped her extended family emigrate to the US as well. She was uniquely generous with her resources and time and helped family and friends obtain housing and employment. She also helped everyone look and feel their very best. A talented cosmetologist, she expertly cared for everyone's hair. Her jobs in some of the country's most fashionable design houses afforded everyone access to beautiful clothes.

In spite of her humble beginnings, Digna was well traveled, having seen a great deal of Europe and North Africa on tours she organized completely by herself. As well, she often invited her friends and family, affording them access to parts of the world they had never seen.

Digna had a singular and joyful wit. She was quick with repartee, and often turned a phrase with words she made up herself. She also loved to share stories about the past, especially teachings from her parents and the generations before hers.

Digna is predeceased by her parents and brothers and most recently her sister Angelica with whom she emigrated to the United States and lived for decades at their beloved 480 Central Park West. She is also now in heaven with her "two pillars", her nephew Emilio (Andres) Perez and her niece Maria (Mara) Arrindell, among other nieces and nephews. The matriarch of a large family who adored her, Digna is survived by her younger brothers and sisters, many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews, a multitude of close and life-long friends, and her dearest hermana and comadre, Celia Sanchez.

Digna's profound faith in God's love and mercy held her steadfast throughout her life and in the end of her time on earth. When no longer able to attend her beloved Ascension Church she watched mass daily. Digna was a steadfast supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In lieu of flowers a donation to this worthy charity is appreciated.

A Mass of Christian Burial at Assumption Church and a commital at Cyprus Hills Cemetery will be scheduled at a future date.
