Maria Cuevas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Queen of Heaven Cemetery and Funeral Center on Mar. 30, 2026.
Maria G. Cuevas, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026, at the age of 92, surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 11, 1933 in Zacatecas, Mexico, Maria was the cherished daughter of Maurilio Gutierrez and Juana Munoz. She was preceded in death by her parents and her dear brothers, Eusebio and Angel Gutierrez. She is survived by her sister, Socorro Marquez, and brothers, Danny Gutierrez and Mario Gutierrez. Maria's life was a testament to love, resilience, and dedication. She embarked on a new chapter of her life in 1959 when she moved to Santa Paula, California. It was here that she met her soulmate, Rosendo A. Cuevas, at a Black and White Dance in Fillmore, California. They were married on August 27, 1966 and moved to San Diego to begin their life together. Together, they raised three wonderful daughters, Veronica Arst (Jason), Imelda Lamoureux (Blaise) and Irma Volenec (Greg). In 1978, Maria and her family moved to Concord, California where they created lasting memories over the years. Maria's legacy continues to flourish through her seven grandchildren: Hailee & Riley (Veronica), Luc & Alex (Imelda), Sloan, Thomas, & Allison (Irma). Her grandchildren were her everything. A devout member of St. Agnes Catholic Parish since 1978, Maria's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She enjoyed walking to daily mass for many years. Maria's warm and welcoming nature made her a cherished presence at the Forest Park Swim Club, where she greeted guests and supported lifeguards with her ever-present smile. Maria demonstrated her compassion and generosity through her avid blood donations to the American Red Cross, touching countless lives with her altruism. Maria and Rosendo shared a love for adventure, exploring 17 countries across 4 continents. In addition to extensive international travel, Maria enjoyed seeing the natural wonders throughout the United States and Canada, including a Canadian train tour from Vancouver to Montreal, an Alaskan cruise, a tour of the National Parks of the West, family trips to Hawaii & Bend, Oregon and the cities of Washington D.C., New York, New Orleans, and Boston. Among her favorite destinations were the vibrant cultures of Spain and Portugal, the romance of France, and the serene landscapes of Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Pismo Beach. Maria was also known to love casinos and enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas and Reno. Those who knew Maria will remember her for her kindness, her culinary delights, and her unwavering dedication to her family. She was the ultimate caretaker, always putting her loved ones first. Her deep connection with Rosendo endured even as Alzheimer's took many memories away, a testament to their enduring love. In February, 2026, Maria & Rosendo celebrated 60 years of marriage with a mass at Christ the King, where they received an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Leo. A service to honor Maria's life will be held on April 9, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Queen of Heaven Chapel and Cemetery, located at 1965 Reliez Valley Rd., Lafayette, CA 94549. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Maria's memory to the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org.

The Cuevas family extends their heartfelt gratitude to family and friends for their love and support over the years. The family would also like to thank Alameda Hospice, BrightStar Care, and Susi Laton, for the compassionate care provided to Maria in her final days. Maria's warmth, love, and spirit will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who were blessed to know her.
