Maria Del Carmen "Carmela" Flores

August 19, 1951 – September 30, 2025

Maria Del Carmen "Carmela" Flores, 74, passed away on September 30, 2025, in Sioux City, Iowa. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, wife, and friend, Carmela was the kind of woman whose love was felt in every meal she cooked and every life she touched.

Born on August 19, 1951, in Villa Matamoros, Chihuahua, Mexico, she was the daughter of Martina and Abel Flores Sr.

Carmela came to the United States with strength and hope for a better life. She first lived in California before planting roots in Dodge City, Kansas - the place she would come to call home. There, she shared her life with her beloved husband, Rafael Lemus, and together they built a family grounded in love and generosity.

Her kitchen was never closed, and no one ever left her home hungry. Whether she was making tamales at Christmas or a simple meal on a Tuesday, food was Carmela's love language.

She leaves behind her husband, Rafael Lemus, her children: Sergio Flores, Gerardo Flores, Adrianna Flores, and Rafael Lemus Jr., her cherished grandchildren: Jasmine Flores, Jacquelyn Flores, Xavier Flores, Alexa Alvarenga, Aime Flores and Naomi Flores and her adored great-grandchildren: Ava Cardenas, Leonela Martinez, and Adrianna Valeria Flores. Her memory lives on in each of them.

Carmela is survived by her brothers Abel Flores, Jesus Flores, and David Flores. She now joins in eternal peace her sister Dolores Vargas and brothers Jose Flores, Antonio Flores, and Armando Flores.

Above all else, Carmela will be remembered for her selflessness and love for her family. Her hands were rarely still - always cooking, comforting, or caring. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit lives on in the hearts and homes of those who loved her.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Funeral mass will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at 10:00AM with Father Wesley Schawe presiding. Burial will follow at a later date as cremation will take place. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Monday, October 6, 2025 from noon to 8:00PM with a vigil at 7:00PM. Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book at www.swaimfuneralhome.com.

Maria Del Carmen "Carmela" Flores
