Maria Leon
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Social Worker, and Compassionate Counselor
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Maria Leon, born in Villalba, Puerto Rico, and raised in Newark, NJ, at the age of 67. A devoted mother, cherished grandmother, loving sister and aunt, compassionate social worker, and dedicated substance abuse counselor, Maria was deeply committed to the recovery program of Narcotics Anonymous for over 27 years. She departed this world leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support for those in need.
Maria was reunited in eternity with her beloved parents, Anibal and Arcadia Leon, and her dear brothers William Figueroa, Samuel, and Jose (Pops) Leon, whom she loved deeply and missed dearly. Their spirits now embrace her once again, welcoming her with open arms.
She worked tirelessly as a social worker for Essex County and as a substance abuse counselor, guiding and uplifting individuals on their paths to recovery. Maria was a fierce advocate, offering not only her professional expertise but also her deep empathy and unshakable belief in second chances. Her work was more than a career-it was her life's mission, and she changed countless lives along the way.
Above all, Maria was a devoted and loving mother to her five children: Rosa Padilla (Rivera) and her husband Eddie, Wilfredo Rivera and his wife Sonia, Geraldo Rivera and his wife Diana, Samuel Leon and his wife Angelina, and Angelica Cortez. She was also a proud and adoring grandmother to Eddie Padilla Jr., Gabriel Berger, Catalina Rivera, Siena Rivera, Alana Rivera, Gideon Rivera, and Glory Rivera. Known for her big heart, infectious laughter, and vibrant personality, she was the "crazy, loud, outspoken, and loving" mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who brought warmth, wisdom, and joy to everyone around her.
Maria is survived by her loving brothers Roberto, Daniel, and Rene Leon, and her devoted sisters Norma, Maximina, Rosa, and Lucy Leon. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored and who will forever cherish her love, humor, and unwavering support.
Maria's kindness, generosity, and unwavering support touched the lives of many. She had an innate ability to make people feel seen, heard, and valued, and her impact will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Beyond her devotion to family and community, Maria was a die-hard New York Mets fan. She lived for the thrill of baseball season, cheering passionately for her team through every high and low. No matter the score, her faith never wavered-because for Maria, it was always LET'S GO METS!!!
Maria's love, spirit, and legacy will continue to shine in the lives she touched.
Maria will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her love will live on in the hearts of her family and the countless people she uplifted throughout her lifetime.

Miss Leon, was one in a million in a dark place she showed me love could shine through even in the worst of places. It took a very special person to work with people in a halfway house. I was there 3 years and without Miss Leon I can´t say I would have completed it without her compassion and drive to push me to be the best person I could be. Let alone the faith she had in me. We don´t have many people as caring and with the drive to help people turn their lives around. You are truly missed by many of people you touched! I know you earned your wings!! I love you and can´t wait for the day we see each other again!

Lourdes, you helped me be a better person and especially for those that counted my fiancé, Myra and my three sons, Jeremy, Christian, and Ian also my family like my mom and all of them. Thank you for that as I'm still with them and my family is proud of me. Thanks to you.
Grief is the price we pay for love. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Sending my love and deepest sympathy to you and your family. I was so sad to hear of your loss. Celebrating the life of a great person. I'm going to miss you and you're joking ways. I hope you feel surrounded by much love from this admiration you gave me told you and the surprises of you becoming this angel for us all and those trying to get their lives back together which many did while you were there, thank God for you and I will be so sad by the time I never spent with you with my family, love you and many and your family and surrounding friends. PS did everyone know this girl was in the military too wow, she just did it all what an inspiration.

What a beautiful soul. She will definitely be missed. Her hard work and dedication was always something to admire. We´ve worked together at The Kintock Group a community release program, back in early 2000 and always remained great friends. Rest in paradise, Maria
In this picture, she attended my paint and sip.
