Maria Amanda Muñoz de Achury, affectionately known as Amanda, age 95, passed away at her residence on August 4, 2025 in Boca Raton, Florida. She was born in Chinchina, Colombia on October 28, 1929 (The start of the Great Depression) to the late Rafael Muñoz and Maria Lopez. https://maps.app.goo.gl/cGnBUnrn2xLHmTiq8 She was the youngest of 8 children (2 girls and 6 boys). They all lost their mother 3 years later. Amanda and her sister were raised by her 4 wealthy aunts and her paternal grandmother (Antonia). She did not have the happiest of childhoods, but they never wanted for anything in those Depression years.

Amanda lived a full and adventurous life. During the Venezuelan oil boom she worked for the Orinoco Mining Company as an administrative assistant in the 1950s. She traveled throughout Centro America in the late 1950s. She bought merchandise from Panama to trade back in Colombia. With the money she made she ventured into the United States in the early 1960s. She worked as a nanny for wealthy families and at one point she worked for the film and theater director Mike Nichols. She returned to Colombia and met her future husband Guillermo Achury (retired Chief of Medical Services for the Colombian air force) and a practicing dentist. They wed in Cali, Colombia in 1968 and soon thereafter traveled to the United States where he sought to become certified to practice dentistry in the United States. Amanda worked for a while as a nurse's aid in Norwalk, Connecticut and later on moved to New York city to work as a maid and then room inspector in the New York Hilton Hotel. In 1977 she returned to Colombia to live with her husband and finish raising her only child, Dario. She came back to the United States with her son in 1986. She worked as a maid and housekeeper to help her son through college. She retired in the late 1990s. Her husband Guillermo Achury passed away in 1995. Subsequently she purchased her dream home in Boca Raton, Florida in 1999 and lived the rest of her years happily tending to her home, her cats and her son. During those happy years she also had the opportunity to travel widely and on multiple occasions throughout Europe with her son: England, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain among others.

She was diagnosed with cancer of the liver in January 2025 and underwent a quick procedure a month later. Afterwards, she was able to continue to live a pain-free, active, independent, and fulfilling life until 5 days before her death. She did not want any major medical interventions. She chose hospice at home. She received Holy Communion and all the sacraments two days prior to her death. Her last conscious action was taking the Holy Host in her mouth after which she fell into a deep slumber until the moment of her death. She took one last breath and went peacefully into the afterlife.

She is survived by her son, Dario Achury and her two beloved cats (Chiquito and Negrito).
Memorial Mass to be held at St Jude Catholic Church sometime in the next 30 days: https://stjudeboca.org/
No viewing or celebration of life ceremony will be held. At a later date her ashes will be taken back to Colombia and placed in a chapel to lay next to those of her sister (Ligia Muñoz).
