Maria Ortega, born on October 2, 1940, in Odem, Texas, passed away on July 11, 2025, in Abilene. She lived a life filled with faith, family, and a deep love for her community. Maria was a devoted Catholic who cherished her church and its teachings, spending countless hours in prayer and service.

Raised in Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico by her beloved grandmother, Fortunata Baeza Ruiz, Maria's resilience and spirit shone brightly throughout her life. Her first marriage to Alfredo Mora Camarillo brought her joy, and together they had a family that became the cornerstone of her existence. Following the passing of Alfredo, she married Carlos Ortega, with whom she later divorced in 1996. Maria was preceded in death by her first husband, Alfredo, her three cherished sons, Julian Mora Baeza, Paulo Alfredo Mora Baeza, Lupe Mora Baeza, and one special daughter, Paz Mora Baeza,

Maria leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Maricela Mora Baeza, who is married to Feliz Rojas; Elvia Mora Baeza, wed to Lorenzo Nopalera; Francisca Mora Baeza, married to Dolores Aguilar; Vicente Mora Baeza, who is married to Odili Mairena Olivas; Irene Mora Baeza; Maria Mayela Mora Baeza, married to Carlos Soto; Jesse Mora Baeza, who is wed to Maricela Mora; and Maria Guadalupe Hernandez, married to Sergio Hernandez. Her family tree extends to encompass 40 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren, all of whom were deeply cherished by her. She was most proud of all her children and was a fantastic provider after Alfredo passed. She was the definition of a "super mom" and "super grandmother"

Maria was known for her unwavering strength and work ethic. Upon moving to Abilene, she initially worked at the Abilene Reporter News, showcasing her determination. Over the years, she contributed to various restaurants and dry cleaners in the area until her well-deserved retirement. In her free time, she found joy in playing Bingo and spent many serene moments praying the rosary. As an active member of the Legion of Mary at St. Francis Catholic Church and a dedicated Cursillista, Maria cultivated connections that enriched her life and the lives of those around her.

Maria Ortega's warmth, nurturing spirit, and ability to uplift those around her will be profoundly missed by all who knew her, both in Abilene and in her homeland of Mexico. Family was everything to her; she embraced and supported her children wholeheartedly, making sacrifices to ensure their well-being and happiness. As we honor Maria's memory, let us remember her devotion, strength, and the love she so generously shared with her family and friends.

Visitation services will be held on July 15, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Funeral Home Chapel located at 5750 Hwy 277 South, Abilene, TX. A Rosary will follow from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass in celebration of her life will take place at St. Francis Catholic Church, 826 Cottonwood St, Abilene, TX, on July 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with interment to follow at Abilene City Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
