Maria (Mary) Scoma (nee Gallo), 83 years old, passed away peacefully at her home in Plymouth Meeting, PA, with her family, on Good Friday at 03:00 on April 10, 2020. She was born in Sciacca, Sicily, Italy on April 14, 1936. She was the devoted daughter of the late Vito and Calogera Gallo (nee Venezia).
Mary met her late husband, Salvatore A. Scoma, while he was visiting his parent's home town of Sciacca, Italy, with his family. They were married a few weeks later, in a double wedding ceremony, along with Salvatore's brother, Joseph, and his bride, Mica, in Sciacca. The two brides sailed to America, and were reunited with their husbands later that year. They shared 64 years of happiness together. Mary was the devoted mother to Anthony S. V. Scoma, Linda Scoma Rosen (Howard "Hesh" Rosen), and Christine Scoma Whitehawk (Michael Whitehawk). She was the dear Nonna to Lucas and Nicolette Whitehawk. She was a beloved sister to Accursia "Cusina" Bellitti (the late Vincenzo), Josephine Nicolosi (the late John), and the late Domenica "Mimma" Cottone (the late Vito). She was also a beloved Sister-in-Law, cherished Aunt, a treasured Cousin, and friend to many.
Mary will be remembered for her kindness, devotion to family, sense of humor, keen wit, and exceptional Italian home cooking. Her specialties included homemade bread, pizza, pasta al forno, chicken cutlets and cheese pie. For many years she kept an extensive vegetable garden. Our family enjoyed many Holiday celebrations together, but she is most remembered for her delicious Thanksgiving dinners and 4th of July celebrations where her sisters and their families would gather.
Mary worked at the Glasgow Sweater Factory and at People's Dry Cleaners as a Master Seamstress; she enjoyed chatting with the regular customers, many of whom requested she continue her service after her retirement. She could sew anything from dresses to draperies. She loved to travel, toured Europe with her daughters many times, and vacationed at the Jersey shore every summer. Mary was so happy to welcome her two Sons-In-Law into her family, whom she adored as if they were her own children. After she retired, she was the nanny for her Grandchildren, and took great pleasure in spoiling them with affection, pizzelles, pasta and soda.
Mary will be missed by many but never forgotten. We are comforted in our faith that she has been reunited in heaven with her beloved Sal.
Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 mandates, Mary's Funeral Mass and interment will be private. The family plans a Life Celebration to be held at a later date when conditions permit. Friends and family interested in being notified of this gathering, please email
