In Loving Memory of Marian Ruth Dausey
Marian Ruth Dausey, a spirited soul whose independence and confidence shaped our lives, passed away peacefully November 1, 2025 at the age of 99. Marian was born on May 29, 1926 to Cecil and Dorothy McNeil.
From a young age, Marian dared to dream beyond the horizon. Inspired by the legendary Amelia Earhart, she took flying lessons as a young girl, embracing the skies with the same fearless determination that would define her life. Her adventurous heart and generous spirit never wavered.
Marian grew up in Bluffton, in the Buster Keaton era, and often shared stories of the retired circus performers, and the elephant and zebra that lived in the neighborhood. Growing up as an only child, she eagerly galloped on horseback and wandered far beyond the lines drawn for her, often laughing about exploring places she was told to steer clear of.
In 1946, Marian married Wayne Dausey, her childhood sweetheart, when he returned from the Marshall Islands where he was stationed with the Marines during WW2. They stayed in Bluffton, where they grew up, to raise their family.
Marian earned her bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University. Determined to continue her education, she completed her master's degree while raising a young family and working third shift at Howmet (formerly Misco). But it was in the classroom where Marian truly soared. As a beloved fifth-grade teacher, she became a beacon of inspiration, warmth, and wisdom. Her students adored her-not just for her engaging lessons, but for the way she made each child feel valued. She was the teacher everyone hoped to have; compassionate, kind, and endlessly encouraging.
Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she shaped, the dreams she nurtured, and the confidence she instilled in generations of young learners. Marian taught not just from textbooks, but from the heart. Though she lived nearly a century, her spirit was timeless. She had a rare openness of mind.
Marian developed lasting friendships with many teachers who shared her enthusiasm. These connections brought joy to her life and fostered a supportive community. Together, they kept learning and adventuring as they traveled to places like Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, and Russia.
Marian was known for having an eye for fashion and loved cars, particularly convertibles, owning Tempest, a Mustang and finally, an MGB that she drove well into her 80's. She loved clothing and accessories, coordinating her ensembles with jewelry, scarves, hats, jackets, purses, and shoes - always making a fashion statement. Someone once noted she'd cycled through the entire school year without ever repeating an outfit.
Marian was the matriarch of the family, always finding joy in bringing loved ones together. When she moved to her home in Whitehall, it was a haven during the holidays, filled with warmth, laughter, and delicious food. She loved hosting gatherings, ensuring everyone felt welcome and cherished.
One of her greatest pleasures was attending her grandchildren's sporting events. Whether cheering from the sidelines or celebrating their victories, she was their number one fan, offering endless encouragement and love.
In her later years, Marian treasured the time spent with her three daughters. Together, they would cook, share stories from years gone by, and reminisce about favorite memories. Those moments, filled with laughter and togetherness, were among her most treasured times. Marian maintained her strong sense of independence, living on her own until just days before her passing.
Marian is survived by: her three daughters, Denise Dausey (Jeff Worman), Debbie Dausey and Kelly Dausey (Paul Kuipers); grandchildren, Michael O'Toole (Danielle), Matt Etterman, Joe Etterman (Jamie), Erin Koning, Sam Kuipers (Aubrey) and Jane Kuipers; and great grandchildren, Hannah O'Toole, Kale O'Toole, Drew Etterman, Emily Etterman, Harper Koning and Connor O'Toole. She is remembered fondly by former students, colleagues, friends, neighbors, her beloved dog, Charlie, and all who had the joy of knowing her.
Marian was preceded in death by: her infant daughter, Laurie (1963); her first-born son, Wayne Walter Dausey Jr. age 14 (1964); her husband of 38 years, Wayne Walter Dausey Sr. (1984); and her first-born grandchild, Sara Denise O'Toole (2002).
A private, family celebration of her life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to White Lake Community Library, honoring her lifelong commitment to education and empowerment.
