Helen Marie (Bzinak) Gibbons, 87, of Mt. Lebanon was born May 15, 1936 in Punxsutawney, PA, the daughter of the late George Bzinak and Helen (Kopchick) Bzinak. Marie passed away peacefully Saturday, May 20, 2023 at her home in Concordia of the South Hills. Marie was a graduate of Mercy’s School of Nursing where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. Marie worked as a Registered Nurse and Utilization Review Nurse at Mercy until her retirement. Early in her marriage, she and her husband, Leo Patrick Gibbons, also owned the restaurant, The Buccaneer, on Brookline Boulevard. Marie and Leo were married for 20 years and had five children. Marie was not one to sit idly. She was an avid cross-country skier and golfer, she belonged to a volleyball and bowling league, and she traveled. Marie traveled to many places in the USA and around the world including Italy, Germany, Spain, Egypt, and Tunisia. In the USA, she visited many states and many national parks. Marie found the wonder and valued the history of every country, state, city, and park that she visited. She cherished her family and friends welcoming them into her home. She was proceeded in death by her husband Leo Patrick Gibbons; mother, Helen (Kopchick) Bzinak; father, George Bzinak; and brother, George Bzinak. She was the loving mother of Marianne (Chuck) Thomas, David (Lori) Gibbons, Georgeanne “Gigi” (Scott) Trask, Suzanne (Mark) Sturdivant, and Edward (Collette) Gibbons. She was the adoring grandmother of Melissa Thomas, Forrest Thomas (Daniella Velasquez), Jason (Flora) Gibbons, Erin (Sam) Jaszewski, Ben Trask (Jasmine Boulware), Katarina Trask, Matthew (Mackenzie) Sturdivant, Madison (David) Harris, Maria Sturdivant, Anthony Jaskiewicz, Megan Gibbons, Alexis Gibbons, Joe Gibbons, and Cole Gibbons. She was also the dear great grandmother of Declan Gibbons, Reed and Rory Sturdivant, and Greyson and Harper Harris. She was the devoted sister of Patricia (Jack) Betts, George (Priscilla) Bzinak, Richard (Tina) Bzinak, and Denise (Bill) Airhart. She was also an affectionate aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Marie’s life at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15220 on Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 2pm until 4:30pm. A funeral service will begin at 4:30pm, Saturday in the funeral home. A celebration of life and dinner will be held immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations can be made in Marie’s name to the St. Bernard’s School, Ave Maria Academy, 401 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15216 (412-341-5444).
