Marie Hughes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wyman Cremation & Burial Chapel on Dec. 9, 2025.
It is with heavy heart & grief that Adriana Romero and David Lewis Long Jr. announce the passing of their beloved mother, Marie Diane Hughes on November 29, 2025 in Scottsdale AZ. She was surrounded by her beloved children & loving family & friends.

Marie, also known as Mom by her children, Cy in school, Cydana by her family and Yuya by her eldest brother & cousin, was born in Nogales AZ on March 16, 1961. She attended Nogales schools until her family relocated to Scottsdale in 1972. She graduated from Saguaro High School, Class of 1979.

After graduation she followed her father's footsteps in the golf course industry and started her career at Gainey Ranch. She later became a Golf Course Superintendent at Palo Verde Golf Course where she remained for several years. She was one of thirteen women GC Superintendents in the Nation and the only woman superintendent associated with the Golf Course Association in AZ. She was a member of the Mexican American Golf Association.

Cydana had a love of animals & while in Palo Verde she had a menagerie of animals and two adopted burros from the Arizona Department of Land Management, which roamed the vast grazing area along with a horse. She had a vast vegetable garden.

She is survived by her grandson, Xavier Anthony Justice Dupoux, her mother, Loyola M. Chavez and brother Michael Rene Hughes, Scottsdale; sister Michele I Hughes, The Bay Area California; a younger brother, Abel Tomas Hughes, Del Mar, CA; many loving aunts, cousins & friends; Nina Machi Miranda Carmona.

She was predeceased by her beloved father, Abe Hughes; grandson Anthony Hernandez; nephew Michael Edward Hughes. She always had a pleasant look about her. She was a Jane of all trades. As her brother Abe stated, we have lost the work horse of the family.

Impending Celebration of Life services will be announced later by her beloved Son & Daughter whom she was so proud of. Que en Paz descanse nuestra querida mama, hija, hermana, sobrina, prima y amiga. Rest in Peace Dear One.
