Marie J McAfee, 97, of Athens, Pennsylvania passed away Friday, April 4, 2025. She is survived by her children, Diann (Monty) Sutton, Lynn (Christina) McAfee, Charlene (Harold) LaBarr; stepchildren, Robert "Bobby" Henshaw Jr., Earl, Ronnie, Kenny, Shirley, Lisa, Susan, and Louise; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marie was predeceased by her parents Paul and Pearl Hoffman; her significant other Robert Henshaw Sr.; her granddaughter Sherlyn Newcombe; brothers, Richard Hoffman and Howard Hoffman; and a newborn sister.
Marie J. Mc.Afee was raised on a small dairy farm by her parents and her two brothers on Ellis Creek Road in the small farming community of Glencairn, New York. She first attended grade school just down the road at a small one-room schoolhouse and as she became older attended and graduated from Waverly Central High School.
Marie started her working career as an employee at Tioga General Hospital. Sometime later she work for several years at I.B.M. in Owego, New York followed by working the largest part of her working life as an employee at Endicott-Johnson Shoe Factory at both the Owego and Endicott, New York locations where she retired.
Marie was an active member of the North Barton Grange Hall on Ellis Creek Road for over 75 plus years and enjoyed helping at all the grange hall functions including helping to making homemade ice cream for the yearly Ice Cream Socials. She also loved helping every year at the North Barton Grange's booth at the Tioga County Fair at the fairgrounds in Owego.
Marie was also a longtime member of the Bumpville Bible Church in Rome, Pennsylvania where she enjoyed attending services and loved participating in the church's women's group. The fellowship at her church and her faith meant a lot to her in her older years.
In her middle age, Marie was a auxiliary member for the local Sheriff's Department assisting with the security and patrol at the Watkins Glen International Raceway during their race car events. She was also a member of the N.R.A.
Marie loved being a resident and member of the valley's community and enjoyed going to all the local activities including the yearly local parades and other outdoor events. She always had a love for the great outdoors. As an avid gardener she enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She also loved canning all her fresh bounty from her garden that grew, which she would generously share with her neighbors, friends and family. She was also a wonderful cook. Marie also enjoyed sewing; making garments and quilts over the years. She loved teaching her knowledge of life skills to her children and grandchildren.
Marie was a loving and devoted mother and step-mother that was as comfortable on a farm tractor as she was in her kitchen or her sewing room. She will be greatly missed by her large family, her neighbors and her friends.
There will be a graveside service at Barton Center Cemetery at 11:00 am, Friday April 11, 2025. There will be a luncheon at the North Barton Grange Hall on Ellis Creek Road following the burial. Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help offset funeral expenses.
