Marie Novosad Sekula

Marie Novosad Sekula, age 87, of Rosenberg, TX passed away on Monday, June 30, 2025. Marie was born to the late Rudolph and Adela (Cordes) Novosad in Wharton, TX on March 26, 1938 as "Mary" Novosad. She was number 7 of 9 children in a busy household. When her older sister Jane enrolled her in first grade and was asked her name, Jane said her name was Marie and that stuck for the rest of her life.
The family moved to Fairchilds and Marie graduated from Needville High School in 1956, taking a job in Rosenberg. She later moved to Houston where she met her husband, William (Bill) Sekula. They were married in 1962 and had three children: Sheryl, Russell, and Elaine. Life was good until July 16, 1976 when Bill was tragically killed at age 35.
She resided in Rosenberg until marrying her second husband Chester Wiatrek. The marriage relocated her and her children to Panna Maria, TX and later, Seguin, TX where she added the role of stepmother for several years.
All her life she enjoyed gardening, canning, oil painting, singing in choirs, baking kolaches and unique birthday cakes, and feeding all stray pets. She also fulfilled her dream of going to college, and at age 52 she earned her Elementary Education degree with bilingual certification in 1990 from Southwest Texas State University, making the Dean's List more than once in the process.
Throughout her life, Marie worked in a variety of industries including banking, elementary school teacher, postal worker, and even worked as a Home Health Caregiver until the day of her stroke in November 2012. Her natural stubbornness worked to her advantage when she then had to re-learn numbers, the alphabet, handwriting, and regain the use of her right arm and hand.
Survivors include her daughter Sheryl Williams and husband Scott, son Russell Sekula, and daughter Elaine Schwarzkopf and husband Marty, grandchildren Chelsey Bloch and husband Trevor, Nathan Williams and wife Kayla, Megan Williams and fiancé Joseph Frank, Taylor Sekula, Brandon Sekula, and Lexie Strom and husband Jake, great grandchildren Conner Bloch, Colten Bloch, Corben Bloch, Carter Bloch, Catie Bloch, and Maeve Williams, sisters Rosalie Meyer and Adeline (Addie) Jackson, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
Funeral services for Marie Sekula will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at Davis Greenlawn Chapel in Rosenberg, TX beginning with visitation at 9am, followed by a Rosary and service at 10am. She will be interred at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Gonzales, TX where she will be buried next to her husband, Bill.
