Marie Cefalu Voss was born on June 21, 1922, in Cefal', Sicily, and passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was the eldest daughter of Concetta and Robert Cefalu, who immigrated from Sicily to the United States in search of a new life.
Marie grew up in Helena, Arkansas, and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. She later moved to Memphis, where she worked as secretary to the president of the Southern College of Optometry. It was there that she met her future husband, Dr. Lawrence Bernard Voss, Jr. Together, they settled in Shreveport and raised their family of five children.
Once her children were in school, Marie began her long career with the Caddo Parish School Board, where she dedicated thirty years of service before retiring. Her Sicilian heritage and Southern upbringing gave her a unique blend of resourcefulness, hospitality, and grace that touched everyone who knew her. She delighted in music, card games, Mah Jong, Mexican Train and holiday celebrations, but her greatest joy was always time spent with family. Everyone knew where to find Marie on Friday nights...with Linda, Virginia and Duane, Vincent & Piper, neighbors, and whichever friends were willing to play games way past everyone's bedtimes! Such great memories!
Marie leaves behind a legacy of Faith, family, and love that will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless friends.
She is survived by her children, Linda Savell and husband William; Robert Voss and wife Jeannine; John Voss and wife Kendra; Marla Shaw and husband Van; and Melody Suess and husband Tim. She is also survived by her beloved sister and best friend, Virginia Lanoue and husband Duane; grandsons Austin Voss (Janae), Tanner Voss (Shanna), Carson Voss (Skyler), Tristan Voss, Kyle Voss (Lauren), Brent Voss, Whitman Shaw (Haley), Max Shaw, Jack Suess; Darrien Patterson (Daniela) and Billy Savell (Cassie); nephews Vincent Lanoue (Piper) and Tommy Cefalu (Becky); nieces Connie Hagan (Jimmy) and Cindy Peters; great-nieces Caroline Hagan, Catherine Ann Smith (Squires), and James Hagan (Meghan); great-grandchildren Miller Voss, Graham Voss, Bennett Voss, Morgan Voss, Cleo Voss, and Carter Shaw; Jayden Lisby, Allie Savell, Sloane Savell.
Marie and family were blessed by extraordinary caregivers Rosemary Short, Julia Scaife, Christine Nugent, Sean Fleming, and Lissa Scaife; Amy Barone, Stephanie Glenn; and the faithful caregivers from St. Joseph's Hospice who were constantly amazed at Marie's humor, strength and willpower until the Good Lord was ready to finally take her home!
