Etta always joked that her obituary should simply read, “Etta died.” But this is one wish her family has chosen not to honor, because the world deserves to know more about this remarkable woman.

Marietta Sophie Weber, known to all as Etta, passed away on September 28, 2025, after a brief battle with a rare and aggressive cancer of the liver. She was 77 years old. Her last weeks were uncomfortable, but thanks to the compassionate staff at St. John’s Lutheran Circle of Care in Springfield and the hospice team, her days were made as pleasant as possible. True to her spirit, Etta reassured her family that she was not afraid and that she was ready. She passed in the very same building where she had been born on June 23, 1948, to Bill and Marie Fennern.

Etta was feisty, spunky, and blessed with a terrific sense of humor. She graduated from Springfield High School with the Class of 1966 and went on to attend beauty school in Watertown, South Dakota. She began her career as a hairdresser in Springfield, even owning her own shop. In the late 1970s, she and her family moved to Cottonwood, where she worked at Darrel’s Salon in Marshall. By 1981, Etta had settled in Morgan, where she opened Lords & Ladies, a beauty shop she owned and operated until 2000.

After selling the salon, Etta found a new calling at Cedar Mountain Schools, where she worked as a Title I professional. Known affectionately as “Miss Etta,” she became a favorite among students and staff alike. She was the kind of teacher every child remembers: The one you loved dearly but never dared to cross. She poured her heart into every student she worked with.

Etta’s talents and passions extended beyond her career. She was an avid knitter who made hundreds of handmade stocking hats, which she gladly gave to those in need. She loved music and playing the piano. She loved her animal prints-so much so that in her final days she repeatedly reminded her family she wanted her urn to be cheetah print. She also treasured Christmas and never missed a chance to decorate or watch her beloved Hallmark holiday movies (to her family’s good-natured eye rolls). Above all, she adored her grandchildren: Shelby, Collin, Norah, Aleese, and Brenton.

On September 6, 1969, Etta married Thomas Cable, with whom she had two sons, Shawn and Bill. After their divorce, she worked tirelessly to raise her boys largely on her own. She worked extra hours, took on extra responsibilities, and still never missed a single one of their events. Etta was an incredible single mom who gave her children everything they needed and more. Her strength and devotion remain one of the most admired parts of her legacy.

On June 21, 1996, Etta married Russel Weber. For over three decades, they stood faithfully by each other’s side. Her sons were grateful to see her find a love so deep and genuine, one where she was cherished and treated exactly as she always deserved. The joy and steadiness Russel brought into her life meant the world not only to Etta, but to her family as well.

Etta is survived by her husband, Russel; her sons Shawn Cable and Bill (Amy) Cable; stepchildren Shannon (Casey) Silvernail, Jennifer Weber, and Mike (Debra) Weber; five grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Marie Fennern, along with numerous aunts and uncles.

Etta leaves behind a legacy of strength, laughter, love, and warmth. Though she may have preferred her story be summed up in two simple words, her family knows that her life was far too rich and full to be contained in so few.

Blessed be her memory.
