Marilyn Fitzgerald Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 31, 2026.
Marilyn Petersen Fitzgerald joined many loved ones on March 30, 2026, in Murray, Utah.

Marilyn was a proud four-generation resident of South Jordan, Utah. She loved South Jordan and was proud to call it her home. She met Jack at a Sunday School bowling party through mutual friends. They were married one year later in Elko, Nevada, and their marriage was solemnized one year later in the Salt Lake Temple.

Marilyn was an elementary school secretary. She helped open South Jordan, Terra Linda, and Monte Vista Elementary Schools. She loved her work as a secretary, but also filled the roles of counselor, bookkeeper, nurse, mother, and confidant to many children who needed a listening ear.

She loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and used it as a roadmap to guide her life. She served in many callings, including Relief Society President and Stake Young Women's President. Her favorite calling, however, was Primary teacher. She also served as a temple worker at the Jordan River and Oquirrh Mountain Temples. The gospel gave her great hope and joy, and she had an ever enduring testimony of prayer.

Although she was demure, she was a prankster at heart and loved nothing more than a good laugh. Her personal appearance was important to her, and her love of beauty extended into her yard. She loved flowers-especially roses-and clear blue skies.

Community service was important to Marilyn. She served at the Gale Center as a docent and was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP), an organization she dearly loved.

Above all, Marilyn loved her family and friends. She cherished hearing about their lives and always had treats and toys to give away. She loved to "cheat" at family games, where Christmas Bingo was a treasured tradition. She made sure there were always plenty of dollar store prizes so everyone went home happy. She also treasured the time she spent each Thursday going to lunch with her dear South Jordan friends. Family and friends were always her priority.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Cindy (Mark), Mike (Chris), and Randy (Julie); seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and her sister, Onieta Simmons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents, Clyde and Louetta Petersen; and her siblings, Max, Bud, and LuDeen.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at noon at the Copper Point Chapel, 11173 South Copper Point Way. A viewing will be held Friday, April 3, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Jenkins Soffe Mortuary-1007 West South Jordan Parkway. A brief viewing will also be held at the Copper Point Church from 11:00–11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at the South Jordan Cemetery.
