Marilyn Stricklen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bradley Funeral Home - Marlton on Mar. 19, 2026.
With much sorrow we announce the passing of our mother Marilyn at the age of 92. Our mother was the second child of Paul Melvin and Rena (Hastler) Stricklen of Akron Ohio. She was born on June 18th, 1933. She died of complications from a recently diagnosed stage 4 liver cancer. She was a long-time resident of Leisuretowne.

Marilyn was predeceased by her parents Melvin and Rena, sister Ruth Yoder, niece Judith Prichard and son Darrell Paul Chumbley. She is survived by her former husband John Chumbley; her niece Deborah Matzyczn; her daughter Valerie Chumbley; her sons Patrick and John Chumbley; grandsons Lee Chumbley, Christopher Chumbley and John Chumbley IV; granddaughters Shannon Chumbley, Tara Kutnak and Nicole Chumbley; great-grandsons Gavin and Drake Chumbley; a great niece Rena Coburn and a great-nephew Charles Coburn.

Marilyn lived her childhood and young adult life in Akron surrounded by her Stricklen and Hastler kin. She met her husband John Tillman Chumbley while she was working as a drug store clerk in Akron, with whom she had four children. When her husband returned from naval service in the Korean war, normal family life resumed for Marilyn. Later, with three young children she followed her husband to southern New Jersey after his job transfer with RCA from Cambridge, OH to Moorestown, NJ. Mom, was a homemaker most of her adult life. She was very sociable person, and left many memories for us of the numerous bridge games she hosted with the neighborhood ladies. She was a lifelong ballroom dancer. She maintained here youth in the restaurants and dance halls of south Jersey and later in Leisuretowne. After her divorce, she returned to full-time work and established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the credit and collections department of J.C. Penny's. Later, to support her retirement she, worked part-time in the bookstore at Burlington County College.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, on Friday, March 27, 2026, at The Bradley Funeral Home, 601 Rt 73 South and Evesham Rd, Marlton, NJ 08053. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 am, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Marlton Baptist Cemetery in Marlton, NJ.
