It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mario R. Silva, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on January 12, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on August 20, 1938, in Fayal, Azores, Mario spent his later years in Middletown, Rhode Island, where he touched the lives of everyone around him.
For 30 years, Mario dedicated himself to his role as a Maintenance Supervisor at the Officer's Club, where his strong work ethic and cheerful spirit were admired by all who worked alongside him. After retiring, he and his cherished wife, Stelia, embarked on countless adventures, with particularly memorable trips to Italy and a breathtaking 31-day cross-country journey across the United States. To say that Mario's world revolved around Stelia would be an understatement; their love story was an inspiring testament to the beauty of partnership and devotion.
Mario is survived by his loving wife, Stelia, and their three children: Richard Silva (Leona), Paula Ghirardi (Edward), and Maura Ghirardi (Rob). he will also be missed by his grandchildren, Ashley, Kennedy, Brooklyn and Avery, and great-grandson, Kamden. He will be remembered not just for his unwavering commitment to family and work, but for the warmth he brought into every room he entered.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, from 4:30 PM-7:30 PM at Memorial funeral Home, 375 Broadway.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mario on January 19, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport, followed by his burial at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, 465 Brown's Lane, Middletown, RI.
