Marion L. Sheldon
November 27, 1928 - December 9, 2025
Marion L. Sheldon, 97, of Hoosick Falls, NY, passed away on Tuesday morning, December 9, 2025, at her residence. Born on November 27, 1928, in West Rupert, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Willard and Mary (Wilson) Lourie.
Marion graduated from Salem Washington Academy in 1947 and continued her education at Becker College in Worcester, Mass., earning her degree in 1949. She began her career with the New York State Division of Labs and Research in Albany, where she worked for five years before accepting a position at Hoosick Falls Central School. Marion served as an aide in the main office for 28 years, retiring in 1994. Her dedication to the school community and the many students and staff she assisted left a lasting impression.
A woman of deep faith and quiet strength, Marion was a devoted member of the Rupert Congregational Church. She embraced a variety of interests that reflected her creativity and love of the outdoors. She enjoyed tending to her gardens, crafting macramé lawn chairs, and caning wooden chairs. Marion was also an avid golfer and found joy in camping with her family at Lake St. Catherine, a tradition they cherished for more than 65 years. Trips to Cape Cod were another favorite pastime, offering her the chance to enjoy time with loved ones in a place she dearly loved. Above all, family remained at the center of her life, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marion also had a special affection for her cats, who brought her daily comfort and companionship.
Marion is survived by her husband of 72 years, Harold J. Sheldon, whom she married on August 8, 1953. She leaves behind her daughters, Sandra (Arthur) Hyde and Lori (Timothy) Wagner, both of Hoosick Falls. She was a proud grandmother to Jackie Houran, William (Melissa) Hyde, Jeffrey Hyde, Leah Bush, Travis (Danielle) Wagner, and Ross (Jennifer) Wagner; and a loving great-grandmother to Noah and Ben Houran, Cooper and Tucker Hyde, Karsen and Maize Bush, and Weston, Easton, and Everett Wagner. Marion is also survived by a special friend, Colleen Post of Cambridge, as well as several nieces; nephews; and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Marion was predeceased by her son, Jay Sheldon; and her brothers, William, Stanley, Wilson, and Thomas Lourie.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 15, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem, NY. A public burial will take place in the spring at the Rupert Cemetery in Rupert, Vt. with a celebration of life afterwards.
