After a brief illness, Marion Underwood, age 81, passed away peacefully at her home in Altus, Oklahoma on Thursday, December 25, 2025, her most favorite day of the year.
Marion was born in Crumstadt, Germany to Philipp and Käthe (Gelfius) Meister on October 12, 1944. She married Winfred Ellis “Woody” Underwood, Sr. on April 11, 1962, in Darmstadt, Germany. The young couple eventually settled in Lawton then relocated to Altus in 1974 after Woody’s retirement from the United States Army.
During her younger years, Marion enjoyed spending hours working in her yard and planting and caring for many roses and potted plants. She continued to mow her own yard well into her 70s. Marion enjoyed thrift shopping, collecting knick-knacks, dolls, and had an impressive assortment of wooden shoes. A homemaker at heart, Marion’s greatest joy was providing a comfortable home for her family, which she would turn into a Christmas wonderland each year with Christmas trees and decorations in every room!
Marion was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Irmtroud Conley and Sigrid Rowlett; brother, Manfred Meister; husband, Woody; and beloved son, Winfred Ellis “Luke” Underwood, Jr.
She is survived by her sisters, Renate Bray (Topeka, Kansas) and Ramona Meister (Milan, Italy); daughter, Susan “Lucy” Underwood and partner, Angie Gonzalez (Altus); special grandson, Josh Pratt (Altus); several nephews and nieces; and many very dear friends and acquaintances.
