Marjorie Carreathers was born on July 7, 1941 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was the youngest of seven children born to the union of Julius Cleveland Brackeen Sr. and Willie Mae Holyfield Brackeen (Roline, Otis, Joe, Curtis, Rubye, Julius, Marjorie). Of her nuclear family, only Julius Cleveland Brackeen Jr. survives her.
She was a scholar. In the book Alliance Against the Odds, The Manual Training High School Story by Dr. Charles T Ledbetter, she is listed as a student that earned participation in a national initiative to increase scholarship in science, math and foreign language. She earned a degree in nursing with honors and became a registered nurse (RN) while working a full-time job, being a wife, and being a mother to a teenager and a pre-teen.
The degree however was not what made her a nurse. Nursing was a calling on her life. She described this calling with the acrostic NURSE as Nurturing the lives of those in my care, Using my skills, Respecting patients rights, Serving Everyone equally. As a nurse for 47 years she served everyone equally.
Outside of nursing she served those for which her service brought no personal reward. Marjorie Carreathers was a volunteer tutor in Albuquerque Reads, a program which helps students reach the goal of reading at grade level. She was a founding member of Women United for Youth, an organization which promoted scholarship but also taught life skills. She hosted international students during Thanksgiving holidays. She ministered to orphan children in Valencia County.
Marjorie Carreathers was a Activist. She worked to get out the vote in 2016 by becoming a voters registration agent. While serving as a chaperone during a student field trip to a cultural site, she observed unacceptable behavior from the docent. She called the organization to task to protect the self image of future students. The organization took action to establish a more respectful culture.
Her love of fine art led her to study with the late Fred R. Wilson of Muddy Wheel Studio Gallery. She valued his pottery and her own, developed under his tutelage.
She was an adventurous spirit: climbing Tome Hill in Valencia County, entering a volcano in Hawaii, singing in a backup ensemble during a Lyle Lovett concert, taking belly dancing lessons, cruising with the Manual Training High School Mammoth Reunion, traveling solo to Puerta Vallarta.
She celebrated the success of others and enjoyed the success that our Lord gave her. She passed from this life to eternal life with Him on August 8, 2025.
She is survived by brother Julius Cleveland Brackeen Jr., friend Maureen (Mimi) Masciotti, daughter Angela Cross, son Wm. Scott Carreathers (Candace), grandsons Christopher Carreathers (Julia Sanchez), Christian Carreathers, Corbin Carreathers and nieces, nephews and friends.
