Marjorie Helen Gutschmidt

Marjorie Helen Gutschmidt, of Stockton, NJ, died Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. Born December 1, 1929, in Ringoes, NJ, Marjorie lived in the Ringoes, NJ area before moving to Delaware Township, NJ in 1958. She was the wife of the late Charles Gutschmidt, who died in 2016, and was also predeceased by her parents, Ernest & Martha (Fisher) Van Lieu of Ringoes, NJ; her brothers, Stanley Van Lieu and Arthur Van Lieu; her sisters, Dorothy Leasher, and Beulah Wengryn; as well as her sister-in-law, Barbara Hyland, and brother-in-law, Frederick Dudeck. 

Marjorie is survived by her two sons, C. Edward (Deborah) Gutschmidt of Pittstown, NJ, and Bradley Gutschmidt of Stockton, NJ, her daughter Lenore (David) Rothermel of Newberry, FL; her granddaughter, Brenda Rothermel of Chattanooga TN, and grandson, Brian (Barbara) Rothermel of Jacksonville, FL; as well as her sister, Eleanor Van Lieu of Lewisburg, PA and sister-in-law, Betty Jane Dudeck, of North Branch NJ.

A graduate of the former Flemington High School, she was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church, first in Ringoes and later in Stockton. Active for many years in her church community, Marjorie served as a Sunday School & Vacation Bible School Teacher, a member of Christian Endeavor, and the Women's Guild. Most recently, Marjorie was a member of the United First Presbyterian Church of Amwell at Larison’s Corner.

Marjorie was the Junior Superintendent of the Sunday School for ten years, a member of the church choir, a Deacon, an Elder, Chairman of the Mission Committee, and a Commissioner to the Presbytery of New Brunswick. She was formerly employed at the Flemington Presbyterian Church, first as Assistant Church Secretary, and then Church Secretary for twenty years.

Active in community affairs, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a lifetime member of Girl Scouts USA and Scout Leader for ten years, and a Day Camp Counselor for six years; and Assistant Secretary at the Girl Scout Council in North Branch, NJ for three years. Additionally, Marjorie was co-leader of Sifting Stitchers 4-H Club, and served as member/treasurer of the Delaware Township Recreation Committee, and the Delaware Township School PTA, where she volunteered as librarian, lunch monitor, and Substitute Secretary. In 1970, Marjorie was honored as second runner-up for the “Woman of the Year of Hunterdon County.”

After retirement, Marjorie and her late husband, Charles, traveled extensively in their Airstream trailer throughout the United States and Canada, spending many winters in Florida. 

Funeral services for Marjorie will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Boss Road, in Ringoes, NJ. Calling hour will be Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
