Warren Alpaugh Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barber Memorial Home, Inc. - Johnson City on Feb. 20, 2026.
Warren A. Alpaugh, 81, of Chenango Forks passed away unexpectedly on February 12th. He was born in Somerville, NJ, and grew up in nearby High Bridge with his father George, WWII Navy Veteran, mother Ruth, a school teacher, and brother George Lester. Following high school, he graduated from Upsala College and earned his Master's degree in chemical engineering from Rutgers University. He joined the US Army at Fort Dix, NJ and served as a First Lieutenant in the Chemical Corps from 1967 – 1969. From there he began a successful and longtime career at IBM Endicott, having met his wife Sharon early on, and getting married in 1972.

Warren's hard work at IBM enabled him to rise through the ranks, from engineering up through team management, effectively serving as a leading site executive when he retired in 1996. His efforts at IBM led to 6 notable US Patents from 1977 through 1985 in the areas of greatly improving printed circuit board production. He embodied the IBM slogan THINK, providing innovation and intellectual expertise throughout his time in Endicott.

He was proud to have served as IBM's chairman of the Employee Charitable Contributions Campaign in 1993 and 1994, "Catch the Spirit" supporting United Way agencies. With a goal of $700,000 in 1994, he encouraged 100% participation through payroll deductions to help those in need in our community. IBM employees also came out in full force for Day of Caring, with over 250 volunteers painting, cleaning and repairing facilities at many agency locations.

He was able to travel extensively and work at many of IBM's worldwide locations including Germany, where Sharon and sons, Robin and Craig joined him, allowing for the opportunity to experience Europe for several months as a family.

Warren supported Scouting and served as the Cubmaster of Pack 181 that met at the Charlotte Kenyon Elementary School in Chenango Forks. He enjoyed helping to make many a winning Pinewood Derby car for the annual races. He continued to be active in Scouting in Troop 152 Kattelville Tower Builders, especially campouts at Tuscarora and mentoring Robin and Craig as they earned their Eagle Scout rank.

Upon retirement, he remained active at home and in the community, enjoying golf, gardening, summer time in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, NJ, and starting a new vocation in woodworking. He made everything from bowls to keepsake boxes to ornate chairs and benches. His woodworking and restoration talent can be found in several historic homes in the Binghamton area.

Warren had a deep appreciation for local history, serving on the board of the Phelps Mansion Museum and supporting Sharon's work at the mansion as well as the Broome County Historical Society. They enjoyed many events together in the community including ones at Roberson Museum and countless shows at the Forum. Long walks throughout all the seasons in nearby State Park were also an important part of their routine.

Warren is survived by his wife Sharon, sons Robin and Craig, brother George Lester and his wife Pat, Stockton, NJ. A Gathering of Friends and Family is being planned for a warmer day and details will be shared down the road. Until then, the family asks that you offer an act of kindness to someone in need in his memory. Consider making a contribution to the Phelps Mansion Museum, a venue he enjoyed and cared about. https://phelpsmansion.org/

my name is Bob Campagna, I met Warren in 2012 after the super storm Sandy he needed carpenter's willing to travel to New Jersey to rebuild his house in Beach Haven. my partner Frank Plocinski and I agreed to do the job. while we were there Warren came down with his electrician. that night I was planning to fix my shepherd pie no one had ever had it, so dinner was on. if memory serves. Sharon texted him asking if we were at a bar having beers and Philly cheese steaks, he said no and sent a picture of the table with an open bottle of wine and my shepherds pie with slices missing and said one of the carpenters knows how to cook. that was one fine memory rest in peace Warren I'll miss you

High Bridge was a small school, Kindergarten through high school. Warren was several years ahead of us, but we remember him well...memorable as a fine student, for his kindness, sense of humor, and all around good guy. Allen and I send our sincere condolences to his family.
