Mark Block Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Services of Iowa at Ankeny Memorial (MSI) on Jan. 30, 2026.
Mark Andrew Block, 60, passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 28, 2026.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at St. Mary's Catholic Church (460 NW Washington Ave, Elkhart). Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, also at the church.

Mark was born on September 23, 1965, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Dan and Sharon Block. Mark graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1984. He was a stand-out runner with State honors in both track and cross country.

Mark completed his freshman year at the University of Northern Iowa, when tragically, he was involved in a horrible car accident. He was pulled from his car and Life Flight took him to Des Moines, Iowa, where he began a difficult recovery and rehabilitation process as a spinal cord injury survivor. With much determination and hard work, Mark returned to Cedar Falls and graduated from UNI in 1990. While there, Mark met Karla Ruden and the two were married on September 9, 1995. After relocating to Ankeny, Mark and Karla raised their two children, Abby and Danny. Mark's greatest joy and happiness were supporting his young children in their activities and success.

Mark did not let his disability get in the way of his professional career, starting first at the sales desk of his father's business, Iowa Medical Supply in Fort Dodge, and continuing with success in pharmaceutical sales with Johnson and Johnson, Smith and Nephew and Abbott.

In 2009, tragedy struck a second time when Mark suffered a debilitating fall at his home and began the difficult process of recovery all over again. He was assisted with rehab at the Shirley Ryan Rehabilitation Center in Chicago, Illinois. While there, Mark witnessed the amazing good the world of stair climbing did to support injury recovery such as his.

Remarkably, Mark completed numerous fundraising stair climbs, including 103 flights to the top of Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower. Climbing became his passion, something he shared with his kids and extended family, including Willis Tower, Climbing for Air, Double Dog Dare, and the Vertical Mile at Reunion Tower in Dallas Texas. Mark found joy in sharing his story with others.

Mark is survived by his father, Dan Block, of Southlake, Texas; daughter, Abby (Eli) Wright of Waukee; son, Danny Block, of Ames; and sister, Kristi Godfrey (Bill) of Southlake, Texas. He will be missed by his faithful companion, Ernie.

Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Block.

After meeting Mark at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elkhart Mark told me of some of his life's challenges. He gave me a round token "For God So Loved The World", telling me carried this exact coin up/down the stairs at Sear's Tower. I was so touched, his love for God and determination to overcome unbelievable challenges only Christ could of helped him accomplish. I have carried and continue to carry his coin with me everywhere I go, every single day. I smile now as I touch it, knowing he is with Jesus Christ, his struggles and physical challenges are now gone. Most important, his memories, smiles, and friendship light our way, until we meet again in Heaven. God's speed Mark, my friend, my inspiration, may your family and friends forever cherish the time God allowed you to touch our hearts and soul.

To a friend, a Brother Knight of Columbus and a Sir Knight in the 4th Degree of Assembly 3265. Rest well deserved and Soar with the Angels.

Thanks for all the very early morning conversations in the McDonalds parking lot and for sharing Ernie.

Heavenly FATHER thank you for the love and the warmth you have for your flock. I pray today for Mark, his Dad, Sister, his Children and the extended family and friends.   Welcome this Dad, Mark, into the light of your heavenly kingdom.   Like the prodigal son I pray that you see him running towards your open arms and that you lift him and welcome him into your kingdom. I pray  for overwhelming Joy as he hears YOUR voice, now and forever. Let feelings of loss be lessened by joy knowing that he is going Home.    Show the family your kindness and allow them to crawl up on your broad shoulders and I pray that you carry them for as long as they need.  Thank you for your kindness around the world.  I pray especially for all children that they might see YOUR goodness and turn to YOU in their moments of need. in the name of the FATHER, and of the Son and of the HOLY SPIRIT.....Amen

Mark, I've known you for more than 25 years. In that time, you were my brother-in-law, a friend, a father of two wonderful children and finally a man that joined Saint Mary's Church, but came to the second church close to Farrar, Holy Cross.
You came out there because Jeff and I went there. You stopped at our home and had coffee and whatever Jeff made for breakfast. It was alway good to see you again.
Now losing you is bringing into my mind that you will be in Heaven with God first, then next, your family and friends that went before you. I'm hoping Jeff, Jerrica and Aiden will be with you, as you were with all of us throughout the years and we were thankful.
For Abby and Danny, I know that this is hard on your heart, but your Mother and your family will be with you and for you. Love will always be around you.
Many prayers for Mark and his family.
