Mark C. Conroy

Mark C. Conroy, 80, of Jamestown, passed away Tuesday, February 24, at UPMC Chautauqua after a brief period of declining health. He was born May 23, 1945 in Pittsburgh, PA to Charles and Elizabeth Carlin Conroy. He was a 1963 graduate of Avalon High School and a 1968 graduate of Clarion State College.

Following his graduation in 1968, he hitchhiked to Panama to begin his true vocation as a high school teacher at Panama Central School. He taught world history, government, and economics for the entirety of his 35-year tenure. He truly loved teaching and his students, and was known for his catchphrases, fiery temper, handing out nicknames, and his ability to see and value the 'unseen' kids. Many also knew him as 'coach,' as he also coached football, wrestling, and both girls and boys track, leading teams to many divisional championships and athletes to their personal bests.

He loved politics and served as a trustee and then mayor of Panama in the 1980s. One of his proudest accomplishments was independently building his own house in Panama in 1976. He was so proud of the fact that 50 years later it was still straight and sturdy. He loved staying busy with projects and often painted houses and helped others with homebuilding and home repair in later years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise Conroy of Panama, children Matthew (Melissa) Conroy of Buffalo, Erin (Terry) Lew of Kenmore, Jessica (William Guenthner) Conroy of Champaign, IL, grandchildren Mark Conroy of Buffalo, Chloe and Quinn Lew of Kenmore, and Rexford and Louise Guenthner of Champaign, and his companion Cathy Ensminger of Jamestown. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Michael, and infant grandson John Francis Conroy.

No visitation or service will be held per his request. Remember him fondly over a cold beer or a well-made Manhattan, or when you recall what he taught you about history, the principles of economics, or the rules of good sportsmanship.
