I know this is years late, but just happened to see this page. I knew when it happened being from MA. You were so fun to watch. My father was a die hard Detroit Tigers fan so I often watched the games. Best wishes to all your family and friends.

I recently saw the documentary for the first time last week. I have to say that it brought tears to my eyes. I remember back in 76 after he won the game with a 2 hitter and I believe it was 88 pitches. I'm not 100% that it was all in the same game but Me and my buddies were hooked. We live in Lansing, about 90 miles away from the stadium in Detroit. Normally, I would attend about 3 games per year. But this year it was those 3-4 games and the rest of the Bird's home games. We would get together and find out who was driving down. By now, since it was always last minute, our seats were usually in the left field bleachers. But the excitement of the games, you could really feel. It was electric! The bird was the talk of everyone. Especially because the Tigers were not a very good team when he didn't pitch. He made all of our season the most memorable one. Thank You! Mark "The Bird" Fidrych

I recently watched "The Bird" documentary on MLB Network and it brought back a great memory for me.
I lived in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and was at Mark's first game when he 2 hit Pat Dobson and the Cleveland Indians, when Aurelio Rodrigues just missed Buddy Bell's grounder that broke up Mark's "no hitter"...but it was a great game to attend, and I went specifically to watch Fidrych that day.
He was an extremely likeable fellow and the kind of guy you would love to have as a friend.
You were a good guy, Mark...
God Bless you.

Mark "the Bird" Fidrych was so loved by so many people. I'm a Tigers fan (another rare breed!) & remember watching him do his thing & make everyone feel blessed to have him play the game with all his heart to heal all our hearts. In Michigan, you have to work hard & play hard--Mark embodied this for all the world to see. He died on the same day my father died 10yrs earlier at the same age. I did not cry when my dad died but when I read about Mark's death I cried for days.

For Mark...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Mark is the reason I became a lifelong baseball fan, I was 8 in the summer of 1976, and just starting to get interested in baseball, and I quickly found my idol in Mark Fidrych. I lived in South Lyon, near Mickey Stanley, and I remember trying to sneak a peak at a BBQ he had at his house, the rumor was the bird was there among other Tigers players.
Mark was and still is my favorite player, period.

To the family of Mark,
Although not quite old enough to have seen the famous 19-9 season (born in 1982) yet having grown up around the Moose Lodges of Michigan (The Skidway Lake lodge, to be more presise) I can clearly to this day remember meeting Mark on a couple occasions, as he made his way on his infamous snowmobile trek through the state every year. Mark was such a great person with a lot of passion, and heart that a lot of us only wish we had.
My condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to all of you in this time of need.

To Mark's family and friends, our family offers its deepest condolences.
I was just a little boy when Mark was a rookie in 1976, but I was a huge Detroit Tigers fan and Mark was my favorite Tiger.
Friends of mine met him around Tiger Stadium years after his career was over and had a ball talking to Mark. They loved him! He was one of the few guys that would give his time to fans; more than just a hi and a handshake.
Thanks for sharing Mark with us Detroiters. We'll miss him.

I worked with you many years ago at Thornton Nursing Home, and unfortunately lost touch with you. I remember you talking about your famous brother "The Bird" many times.
I am so sorry to hear about your brother Marks passing. Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting him, he sounds like a remarkable person, with a very kind heart, that made many people so happy. Hold on to his legacy and all the wonderful memories that you have. May you find peace with yourself as time goes on. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

To the family of Mark Fidrych,
Your Husband,Dad or Son was truely a remarkable guy! He was a guys guy, NO BULL! Someone who was just happy to be there, even if it was short term. He was a true gentleman and a hero of mine as I loved baseball as a kid growing up in Detroit. Pro sports has been deluted down so bad that the attitudes of people have changed, the Al Kaline's and Mark "the Bird" are a thing of the past. His legacy will go on as long as people still watch the game.
God bless all of you at this difficult time as we are all still realing over the passing of such a great man, here in Detroit. Even though he was not here long, his impact on the people in Detroit consider him there own! We loved you Mark, and Hope your family will move on and remember you as a great Man, with a heart of Gold!
Your friend, your fan,

I watched "The Bird" pitch at Tiger Stadium. A few years ago, he visited our local minor league team, to promote it. He signed five autographs for me; had photo taken with Mark and my family(huge poster size now).
For several years, I have had a license plate of TY COBB, as I am a huge Detroit Tigers fan, in general. But as a memorial to Mark, I went to the SOS office, traded my TY COBB license plate, for THE BIRD! Two custom made bumper stickers, also honor him. Simply, I loved "The Bird."

Mark was the greatest. I was 12 in 1976 and will always remember how excited I was to see the next days box score after he pitched. I wore his number pitching in high school and have a #20 Detroit FIDRYCH Jersey that I've been wearing to games for a few years now that always sparks great memories with fans. I waited in a mob over a first base dugout that year (1976) for at least 20 min to get his autograph. He signed so many. I grew up outside of Baltimore and have never stepped foot in Detroit. Mark was king of Baseball everywhere in 1976. I pray for Mark's wife and daughter and all who loved him. It sounds to me he was a great man everywhere.

He provided so much enjoyment in the sports world. In 1979, I bought a 77 Thunderbird, and the phrase incorporated into my world became "The Bird is the Word" all because of Mark. I do remember sittng in box seats at Tiger Stadium on Michigan Avenue watching him seriously talk to the ball and make the mound dirt his. I pray that he had peace with his maker in his heart. Mark Fidrych: pitcher, rock star. The Bird showed the world the sweet side of punk rock, dressed in a Tiger uniform of all things! Thank you Mark for loving baseball, and wearing that love on your sleeve. I know that I was very privileged to have witnessed that magical 1976 season from the town of Petoskey, perched high in beautiful northern Michigan, listening to Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey call each pitch on the radio. The Bad News Bears were great fiction, but The Bird was an even greater reality. My heartfelt condolences to Mark's family.

Ann Please know that my thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Mark's kindness was far reaching, as you know. Years ago when my sons(now grown men) played Little League Baseball in Northboro, Mark would come to "opening day" or just show up at Memorial field. The kids would be so impressed with him and be in awe of him. They were always so proud that one of Northboro's own was a major league player and had taken the time to see them. Please know that he is in Heaven with our Lord and probably either fishing or showing the children there how to pitch. God Bless Jane Forsberg (Fallon Anticoag)

Mark's death crystallizes a moment in time for myself and probably any other long-sufferng Tiger fan. 1976 was a tough year to be living in Detroit in a lot of ways, but not when The Bird was on the mound.
I still remember how George Kell would mispronounce his name as Fid-Rick and the World Series atmosphere when he pitched.
I regret never having met him, but he made 1976 an unforgettable year for myself and others.
Had he been born 10 years later, medical advancements might have enabled him to continue his career...he might have been a first ballot Hall of Famer.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Mark's family. I grew up in Northgate and played baseball with and against Fiddy. He never lost sight of who he was and where he came from. The summer of 1976 was pretty special. From his first start at Fenway when no one knew who he was, except for those of us from Northborough, to the Monday night game against the Yankees, when the rest of the country found out about Mark. That season will stand up in baseball lore as the season of the "bird"
Thanks to the MLB Network, I have been able to show my daughters who the "bird" was and why he was special. Mark has been taken from us way too soon, and he will be missed. Rest in Peace.

On April 11th I relived a great day in baseball history. I watched Mark pitch a great game in front of loving fans. I was glad they showed the interview after the game of Mark in his stocking feet. He was so down to earth and humble. I was so struck with what I saw read about him that I decided to try to reach him and thank him. I was about to dial the number to his home and thought I shouldn't bother him but after reading so many of these comments I regret not calling. My thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones he leaves behind.

It was 1977 and I met Mark while he and Mickey Stanley and another player whose first name was Jason (not Thompson) were doing an autograph session in a parking lot of a supermarket in Utica, MI.......Mark was such a funny/great/positive/gentle/gregarious man and it came thru while all of us stood in line for autographs and photos.......I sat on his lap for a picture and it was the highlight of my life............it made me so very incredibly sad/depressed to hear of his passing.........I had to sit back and try to understand why his death hit me so hard as I only met him the one time but was a big Tiger fan mainly because of him..........he was so charismatic on the mound and you never knew what to expect from him .... you just knew it would be fun/pleasant and quirky in a positive way............my heart goes out to his family and friends, particulary his wife, mom and daughter......the three most important women in his life........how empty their lives will seem without him but what they can hold onto and fill the emptiness is the "wonderful/loving" memories of him that will forever be in their hearts.........the world has lost an angel but he is looking down on all of us with the fondness and true genuine spirit he had to say it's not over and one day we will all meet again. God Bless!

The Tigers organization has a new slogan this year. That slogan is "Always a Tiger." No one person symbolized that more than Mark Fidrych. Yet, he was more than a Tiger, he was a man who captured the hearts and imaginations of the entire baseball world. I have never met a more down to earth man who seemed, to me anyway, more excited to meet us fans than we were to see him which is saying alot because when "The Bird" came to town we all would line up hours early just to have the chance to meet him. He will be missed greatly by all of us.

From all the other beautiful entries I see I am not alone in how I feel. Mark "The Bird" was a beautiful human being and baseball was extremely fortunate to have him for the short time they did.He will always be a memory I will cherish from 1976.

To the family,
I am so sorry about the sudden death of your husband and father. I am a Red Sox fan in upstate NY and saw him play. Just remeber that he loved you all and this was a terrible accident.
