Mark Flattery Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on Feb. 7, 2026.
Mark David Flattery, 63, passed away peacefully at his home on February 2, 2026.

Born on June 9, 1962, and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Mark lived a life defined by service and hard work. He proudly served 22 years in the Iowa Army National Guard, entering service as a combat engineer before later transferring to the cavalry, where he served as a scout. He retired after more than two decades of dedicated military service.

Following his retirement from the Guard, Mark continued working in hands-on roles as a handyman and laborer, known for his strong work ethic, practical skills, and willingness to take on whatever job needed doing.

In his youth, Mark enjoyed building model cars, trains, and planes, interests that reflected his patience, creativity, and mechanical skill. Throughout his life, he enjoyed billiards and spending time with family, particularly through recreational games shared together. He valued good company, simple routines, and time with those closest to him.

Mark is survived by his brother, Russell Flattery; his sons, Trevor Flattery and Patrick (Michelle) Flattery; and his grandchildren Isabella, Veronica, Liam, and Rowyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Miriam and Mark Edward Flattery, and by his sister, Ann Foxhoven.

A private burial for immediate family will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa. A reception will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 403 Veterans Reception Center, 910 Main Street, Van Meter, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to American Legion Post 403 or the 403 Foundation.

Mark David Flattery will be remembered as a dedicated serviceman, a hardworking man, and a steady, dependable presence to those who knew him.
