Mark Gumkowski Obituary

Mark Joseph Gumkowski, 68, of Middletown, beloved husband of Linda (Watanabe) Gumkowski for thirty-six years, passed away at his home on January 16, 2024. Born in Hartford, he was the son of Evelyn (Stanek) Gumkowski and the late Joseph T. Gumkowski. Mark grew up in East Hartford and has lived in Middletown since 1987. He was employed by Zygo Corp in Middlefield for over forty years fabricating and inspecting high precision optics. He retired early in 2020 due to COVID risks. He was a former member of Polish Falcons in Middletown and the Rhode Island Mobile Sport Fishermen. Mark enjoyed fishing, and boating especially in his Boston Whaler. He looked forward to the annual opening day outings with his Dad. He enjoyed camping in Rhode Island and New Hampshire with his wife, stepdaughter, his loyal dog Warsaw, and wonderful family and friends. Along with his wife and mother, Mark is survived by his stepdaughter Lisa Taylor and her husband Mark of East Haddam; a brother John Gumkowski and his wife Laurie of East Haddam; a sister Mary Crowell and her husband Bruce of Woodstock, and two adoring grandchildren Emma Taylor and Adam Taylor; nieces Jennifer Levesque, Julie Gumkowski; and nephew Gray Storm Crowell. Besides his father, Mark was predeceased by his stepson Joseph Malone. The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses for their wonderful care given to Mark and extend a special thank you to Momma D. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27th at 11:00 am at South Congregational Church, 9 Pleasant Street, Middletown. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. I am so sorry to learn that Mark died. I will never forget the day I met him, though the circumstances weren't optimal. He was so excited that he'd caught a HUGE fish near the old Yankee Power plant. That said, we had many other meetings over time and Mark always struck me as an eternal optimist. May his memory be a blessing.
